To think the flu jab this year is seriously strong?

Oof - got jabbed on Friday morning and still suffering now on Monday morning with a sore arm, sweating, swelling lymph nodes in that armpit etc - I’m starting to freak out that something went wrong with the injection? I know the pharmacist has done a million of them but I can’t help being freaked out as I usually sail through them with no effects at all. Having trouble sleeping with the soreness which isn’t even supposed to be that usual if you’re under 65 - anyone else been a bit knocked by this years jab. Please stop me freaking out!

It's possible, but very rare, to get an infection at the injection site. If your arm is red, or hot, or you have red lines tracking from the injection site then go back to the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist to check it out.

It's very rare, and easy to treat with antibiotics. So nothing to worry about but you should get checked if you think it's a possibility.

Why are people so weird about others having symptoms after a jab? Every year the flu jab knocks me out for a day or two, as did the covid jabs. Saying "oh it's a cold", "you probably have covid" makes it seem like there's something to cover up. People react, it's better to explain the immune response some people get rather than tell people the side effects they have each year, 12 hours after every flu jab, are not from the vaccine.

queenrollo · 18/10/2021 09:44

my 6th year having a flu jab, and the last 5 just a sore arm for a day or two after.
I had this year's at the end of September and I could barely get off the sofa for three days. I could definitely tell my immune system was responding to it.

As others have said, i'm taking this as a sign that my immune system is robust.

Cryalot2 · 18/10/2021 09:53

I don't feel as bad. But people react different.
Normally my arm goes red, swells up and is painful for a week. This time a bit non of that and I went to gym appointment the next day.
Not sure how I will feel after covid annual vaccine, but it will be better than having it and the knock on effect it is having on others.

StormyCornishSeas · 18/10/2021 10:19

I felt really nauseous and vomited after my flu jab. Also my lymph nodes in my armpits were really swollen. Never had any side effects before for the flu jab apart from a sore & tender arm

Scarby9 · 18/10/2021 10:21

No reaction at all for me or anyone else I know who has already had it this year.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/10/2021 10:44

I felt that I had worse side effects than usual. Really bad sore arm. Then felt ill for ages, but obviously could have been brewing a cold or similar already. I took a Pcr and everything but wasn’t Covid.

Athinginitself · 18/10/2021 11:04

It's very variable every year for me, felt awful this year for 48hrs very fluey, fatigued, achey had a mild temp, was fine after 48hrs, not ideal but its just your immune system doing its job.

stalkersaga · 18/10/2021 11:33
@Incredibad - I would guess that the after effects are worse this year because you've had the Covid vaccines.

They are having some unusual effects on people - for example, there are reports of people having allergic reactions to hair dye, when they've previously had none whatsoever - some serious. So it makes sense to me that people's reactions to the flu vaccine might also be stronger following the Covid jabs.
It seems more likely that these responses are because of people's immune systems being relatively under-utilised because of lockdowns and isolation than because of another vaccine. Autoimmune reactions are known to be associated with relatively "underused" immune systems. But careful research will be needed to determine that. Associating any subsequent changes with the COVID vaccine doesn't make sense scientifically (most adults are jabbed, so nobody could pick out a pattern like that by sight, far too many confounds) and something to be very cautious about for obvioua reasons.

@ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife

I had no reaction at all, not even a sore arm.
Same here.
SpringSparrow · 18/10/2021 11:37

I and my dh and my two young adult children have all had the flu jab end of September and none of us had any reactions to it.

Dancerinthedark01 · 18/10/2021 11:40

Could it be because our immune system has been overloaded with all these vaccines in such short succession?

Sprostongreen21 · 18/10/2021 11:44

Having a stronger response to a vaccine doesn’t really mean your immune system is working better than those who didn’t get a load of side effects. It’s just how your own body and immune system has dealt with it. Biology is complex and isn’t that simple but studies have shown those without side effects still get a good immune response/antibodies. So don’t worry if you didn’t get any side effects.

I’m very rarely ill, I’m very lucky. I work in a hospital with lots of sick patients and lovely germs and haven’t needed antibiotics for 20 years. I’ve worked with covid positive patients pre and post vaccination and haven’t caught it. I have had no major responses to any covid or flu vaccines this year other than a sore arm/maybe a bit of tiredness/ headache but I’ve worked the day and the day after having the booster and flu jab. I’d say my immune system works just fine tbh.

TellySavalashairbrush · 18/10/2021 11:47

First year that I haven't felt rotten after the flu jab. Not even a sore arm this time!

kitkatsky · 18/10/2021 11:48

I didn't have any symptoms this time, not even a sore arm

shouldistop · 18/10/2021 11:54

I had my flu jag on Friday, on Saturday I had a sore throat and very sore arm. I put the throat down to side effects, still today though I've got a very sore throat and blocked nose so I think I've been unlucky and just caught a cold at the same time as the pharmacist said any side effects would be gone within 48 hours.
You could just have a viral thing?

shouldistop · 18/10/2021 11:57

@Dancerinthedark01 I don't think that's it. Remember, tiny babies get several vaccines at once.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/10/2021 13:41

@stalkersaga - yes, I think what you said makes sense.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 18/10/2021 14:17

I got mine at the same time as my whooping cough - in the same arm - last week and I was totally fine. The symptoms that you describe are totally normal after most vaccinations so try not to worry. Hope you're feeling bette soon.
