Jimmy Savile

AIBU to say that the BBC should not be making a film about Jimmy Savile. They should not be profiting form his victims misery. Savile attacked at least 450 victims.

Once again his photograph is everywhere, retraumatising his victims who have been treated horrifically by the BBC.

for full disclosure I gave evidence at Operation Yewtree.

Maybe we should all write to the BBC now and express our feelings about this? Once it's been made and put out on tv it's too late.

I wouldn't bother, TBH; most likely they'd relish the attention they'd created
Ditto "writing to MPs", since governments enjoy having a mouthpiece which someone else pays for but they can control

Better, perhaps, to just arrange things so you don't need a licence. It seems few bother to do this at the moment, but the day may come ...

KittensWearingWoollyMittens · 20/10/2021 12:24

YANBU OP, the Jimmy Savile thing and Operation Yewtree is precisely why I will never pay another penny in TV Licence fees to this dreadful organisation. The pay gap between male and female BBC journalists was the icing on that cake

Petition?

Soggychip · 20/10/2021 13:22

FiddlesticksMedi. Good idea.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/10/2021 16:48

Petition?

Oh, please ... do you really imagine a load of names scribbled down or posted online will make any difference to the entrenched mindsets at the BBC?

They might be good for making folk feel they're "doing something" but that's usually about all

cathyandclare · 20/10/2021 17:27

The programme is being shown on the BBC but the production company is actually ITV studios.

@Puzzledandpissedoff

What would you suggest?

TSSDNCOP · 20/10/2021 17:35

I agree. Perhaps if another channel had done it, because I wonder if the BBC will be honest enough to shine a light on their complicity?

I read that Coogan had to think long and hard about participating. I have to say the cheque would never be big enough to see me dress up and impersonate Savill.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/10/2021 18:20

What I mentioned upthread, @FiddlesticksMedi ... arrange things so that a TV licence isn't necessary

As said, it's a bit of a fringe thing ATM and in true British style most just pay up and moan. However large numbers doing the same might just influence things (except they'd probably have the difference made up by government so they keep that mouthpiece I mentioned Hmm)

A tv licence isn’t necessary It’s simple to go legally licence free as long as you don’t infringe the regs. Cancelling their tax is really the only way To hit back at them

What a crock of shit Coogan spouts. He was obviously instrumental in getting this scripted and commissioned. Obviously. He's fucking desperate to use his piss poor impression (sociopaths are often good mimics I've read) to meet this 'challenging role' and show what an accomplished actor he is. But he's not, he's just a cheap impersonator

Yet again the focus is on the predator. The BBC knew it was going on and were told many many times. In turn it banned those who spoke up. It was all about money.

cushtastic · 02/11/2021 09:10

ANY money made from this film should go towards the victims of sexual abuse. Not that that excuses the making of the film in anyway.

I remembered this thread when I read this article in the guardian this morning:

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/nov/02/jimmy-savile-bbc-journalists-risked-jobs-reveal-truth

It looks as though Maclean & Meirion’s hearts were in the right places.

Don't worry, cushtastic - I'm sure the BBC will announce a "sizeable donation" to exactly this (and then employ a bit of creative accounting to make sure it doesn't happen) Hmm

dollsmouse8 · 02/11/2021 12:58

@cushtastic I'm glad Maclean and Meirion investigated and keep going when they were told to stop by their bosses. They were ostracised for doing the right thing and uncovering the truth. They had to give the evidence to ITV to get it into the public domain.

@wavingwhilstdrowning I'm so sorry for what you have been through.
