We are in a house renovation and living out of a makeshift kitchen.

We have a microwave and two induction hobs (so two pans max).

We got one of those mini ovens but it keeps cutting out the fuse.

So far we have pasta, thai curry & rice, indian curry & rice, chicken stew, mash, gravy and fried sausages.

Craving some crispiness in my life.

Any ideas anyone?

Crispiness... Nachos in the microwave? Chips in a deep fat fryer or air fryer?

secretbookcase · 16/10/2021 22:20

Sesame chicken:

Strips of chicken breast, dipped in cornflour mixed with water (about the consistency of milk) then dipped into a dry mix of cornflour, sesame seeds, garlic powder or granules, salt and pepper or mild chilli. Shallow fry until golden. Serve with rice or pitas and salad. They are very crispy. If you prefer, use smoked tofu instead of chicken.

Aromatic crispy fish: Flat fish (e.g. bream fillets) - dipped in that wet cornflour then dry cornflour mixed with pre-toasted and finely ground green peppercorns, a few fennel seeds and a few caraway seeds (not too many as they can be overpowering.) Shallow fry and serve with rice and steamed greens. They are so crispy.

Stir fries, pad thai?

PurpleDaisies · 16/10/2021 22:23

Craving some crispiness in my life.

My easy solution would be to add bought poppadums, Thai crackers, prawn crackers, Doritos, croutons etc to your meals.

NannyR · 16/10/2021 22:26

If you've got the money to spare, it would be well worth getting an air fryer - even when your kitchen is fitted you will get a lot of use out of it.

TheVolturi · 16/10/2021 22:28

Definitely get an air fryer! They're such a fab addition to any kitchen. Basically a little oven that heats up fast and cooks fast.

LemonSwan · 16/10/2021 22:33

Thanks - some really ideas.

Love the recipes for crispy chicken and fish secretbookcase

I will have to take a look again at air fryers. I thought they were just a gimmicky thing but obviously was mistaken!

Stir fries, omelettes, curries, pasta dishes.

RAFHercules · 17/10/2021 13:29

Risotto with parmesan crisps and served with a nice crispy salad.

Whatdoihavetodo · 17/10/2021 13:39

You need a ninja foodi, does it all, air fries, pressure cooks, roasts, grill. Not used my oven much since got this. More expensive than just an air fryer but you get a lot more for your pennies.

Or I have just treated myself to the ninja air fryer duo, you can cook two different items at same time. This doesn't pressure cook but it's more then an air fryer. So can cook veg in one drawer and then your main in other drawer.

I have a ninja air fryer - I did a bit of research before I bought it and they seemed to get the best reviews.

LemonSwan · 17/10/2021 15:26

Oooo I did it!

I ordered this one.. NINJA Foodi AG301UK Health Grill & Air Fryer

www.argos.co.uk/product/4018823

I like that the thing is square. I dont know what it was about the Tefal 2 in 1 being an odd shape that freaked me out.

I wish to be able to do some breaded chicken breasts for a katsu curry.

Fingers crossed I made the right choice!

Just back to say after 10 days or so; that you are all absolute legends for recommending the air fryer!

We have had:

  • steak pies,
  • cod baked in cheese sauce with breadcrumb topping
  • full english with hash browns / sausages
  • naan breads and garlic breads to accompany pastas and currys
  • obviously my beloved chicken katsu (breaded chicken breasts)

And today I am baking potatoes and making cheese and ham potato skins to have with chicken kievs :)

Its a dream! And I am wondering why I ever previously had an oven (besides the capacity issue).

Thanks again :) !!!

We are in the middle of our kitchen renovation so have a make shift kitchen set up elsewhere. You NEED an air fryer! They are a game changer! I bought a Ninja one and its the best £180 I have ever spent!

Newbie8365 · 31/10/2021 19:26

Didnt read the full thread! Oops! Glad you are loving the Ninja!

Reptar · 31/10/2021 19:35

You got the one with the dehydrating option! Have you tried it yet?

User527294627 · 31/10/2021 19:45

Daal with pan fried halloumi - basically follow this recipe: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.hellofresh.co.uk/recipes/mango-chutney-coated-halloumi-sweet-potato-dal-5faacbce0780702cd0535bd2%3famp=true

User527294627 · 31/10/2021 19:45

(If I recall correctly it calls for oven roasted sweet potato, but you could easily cook that in a pan instead)

LemonSwan · 31/10/2021 21:03

It is amazing newbie

Yes we have the dehydration. You need to buy the racks seperate which I havent yet. Thinking of giving it a go for Christmas and having dried orange and lemon decorations for the tree.
