To feel like a terrible parent

My 5 year old has a couple of dark brown marks on his bottom back molar. I brush them twice a day, he only drinks water or the odd sugar free cordial. Not bad diet, but he does eat a lot of fruit (sugar)

He’s due at the dentist in a week, last years appointment got cancelled due to Covid. All his other teeth look great as far as I know. I just feel awful, I have crap teeth, they look fine but are not hard wearing at all. I just feel awful, I’ve let him down and he may need a filling.

Was he premature? Some meds give brown teeth..

A lot of it is genetics, tell the dentist what you do and get the advice, what else you can do. Life is not fair and people shouldn't be judged.

Don't beat yourself up. Children's teeth are not permanent after all. This tooth will be falling out by itself relatively soon and nobody would even know about the staining (which is probably miniscule) with it being at the back.

Could be ameliogenesis imperfecta. My daughter has it but took years to be diagnosed - brown marks on front teeth that have now been treated with abrasion. Had to go to university dental hospital as local dentist had never heard of it.

It's possible some of his enamel didn't develop, we had this. Honestly doesn't sound like he's getting access to loads of sugar so don't panic. Smile

Thanks everyone. I shall wait and see what the dentist says. I had so many filling as a child I’d hate for him to go through the same. Although they used to get paid per filling so maybe they weren’t necessary!

Just an update if anyone has worries with kids teeth. Dental appointment was today and thankfully his back molars are just stained and are completely fine. Very relieved.
