To think charity versions of quiz shows are set up?

Not that I begrudge it, if money is going to charitable causes. But does anyone else think the questions are easier on celebrity versions of quiz TV shows when it’s for charity? Watching Beat The Chasers now and was surprised the first contestant shown was successful and beat the chasers with quite a big time difference because normally someone doesn’t win at least until halfway through the show, until I realised they were a celebrity, and was no longer surprised. It takes something out of watching IMO. Or AIBU?

But Russell Kane is great on quiz shows so I think he would have won anyway.

SoniaFouler · 16/10/2021 20:50

Oh, and that the experts in the celebrity version also get a lot more questions wrong compared to the normal versions, like in the chase in a celebrity version and the chaser answered that the Simpsons characters were coloured blue

I haven't watched tonight's, but I saw one before, it was so obviously a set up, that I've never watched the celebrity version again

Don’t they always give some money to charity, even if the celeb doesn’t win? So they don’t need to fix it because they give money either way.
But yeah I think they do make it a bit easier.

They give a minimum consolation prize to each contestant (which they don’t do the non-celebs) but they fix it, IMO, to look better at paying out big amounts to charities. Celebs win FAR more on celeb versions than ordinary versions. Actually, now I’m wondering…I wonder if it could be some sort of tax break for them?

Paul and Pru are never as savage to any of the celebs when they do a charity gbbo even though most of them are pretty awful

girlmom21 · 16/10/2021 21:04

They are easier but I don't think they're set up in the sense of the chasers giving the win to the contestants

vastgrandupgrade · 16/10/2021 21:05

It might be that celebrities who agree to to go on these shows are those with a decent quizzing knowledge. If you are already in the public eye you might be less keen to risk looking like a bit of an idiot than an anonymous member of the public who everyone will have forgotten 5 minutes after the end of the programme.
They might make it a bit easier for them for the same reason I guess.

Oh yes, I’ve noticed this too on that show, and not even without watching GBBO that much. But the celeb can turn in something half burned and falling apart and the judges are like “it’s very interesting, 8/10” but the normal contestants only have to take their cake out the oven half a minute late and the judges are like “Ugh, too dry, 3/10”

How does what you said make sense? If the questions are easier in the celeb version, then that is because they want the win to go the contestants, I would have thought? There’s no other reason why they would be otherwise.

I find it quite entertaining though and I think the celebs are there primarily to entertain rather than bake (although some are quite competitive) Tom Allen offended me by wearing a suit for baking. I wanted to yell at him to take the jacket off and roll his sleeves up. He was very funny though.

girlmom21 · 16/10/2021 22:29

@SoniaFouler because making it easier question-wise isn't the same as the opposition throwing the competition

FoxyAunt · 16/10/2021 22:35

I can 100% assure you that the Celebrity Chase is in no way “set up”
