Posting here for traffic. Just took a whole sea bass out of its packaging to find it's covered in blood. Had a look inside and there's a thick dark line of liquid along its spine (an artery perhaps?). Took it out and it's almost black. Seems like it hasn't been gutted properly. Is it safe to eat? I read you shouldn't wash fish so I was going to pat the blood off with a tissue.

Help! My stomach needs your advice.

Sorry, no idea! I'd bin it and order a takeaway!!!

WhyAmIDoingIt · 16/10/2021 20:04

I wouldn't risk it.
Go for a Takeaway or freezer tea.

Loveshelly · 16/10/2021 20:05

It’ll be fine. Rinse it and cook it.

TwoPaperAirplanes · 16/10/2021 20:05

That would make me vom. Bin it and get on Deliveroo

20viona · 16/10/2021 20:08

Urgh bin it.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 16/10/2021 20:12

Dear lord no! Not blood on fish! That was alive!

What an absolute waste if you throw it. Ridiculous.

DeadMetal · 16/10/2021 20:13

its called the bloodline and can be removed but i would be careful and if in doubt throw it away

Of course you can rinse it if it bothers you. You're going to cook it aren't you? Why are pp telling you to throw it away? Raw meat and fish come with blood.

Give it a good rinse under cold running water, pat it dry, then see how it looks, I’m sure it will be fine. If need be, run a sharp knife along the line of the blood vessel to cut it away, and rinse and pat dry again. 🐟 🐟 🐟

Yes, definitely try rinsing; the reason for the advice not to rinse fish is because it reduces the time it will stay fresh in the refrigerator, but if you'll use it right away that doesn't matter. Most likely your fish wasn't bled properly after catching (or wasn't bled at all - more likely if you bought it fresh from a fisherman rather than at a supermarket or fishmonger's). If the fish is still fresh and healthy then rinsing should clear most of the blood; a little blood remaining won't hurt you or significantly impact the taste (although you may not like the appearance).

I used to go mackerel fishing and would need to gut and debone the fish... we would wash the fish under the cold tap.... I'm still alive

I hope you washed it and enjoyed your sea bass

ZenNudist · 16/10/2021 20:53

Don't throw it away. What a waste, just cut off the blood line.

DroopyClematis · 16/10/2021 20:59

Bonkers.

dancingstars · 16/10/2021 21:05

Guys, I ate it. Thanks for all your advice!
