Car park issue

I’m so annoyed and upset. Someone bashed into my parked car at work and obviously left no note just ran away. It was either a colleague or a parent (I work in a school). I’ve asked school to check CCTV but just my luck the camera doesn’t cover that particular area. DH will be home soon and I’m worried telling him.

What inconsiderate idiots to just bash someone’s car and run away. There’s no way they wouldn’t have noticed as it must have made a big noise as the dent is huge and paint has all come off that side.

I have tendency to get upset and spiral and as I suffer from anxiety I get very distressed. Dreading DH coming hone. Shall I speak to him in morning or leave it till he notices?

I think it technically goes down as your fault even though it isn't because insurance companies only deal in no fault and can claim from another party or your fault the insurance company has to pay. So even if you have protected no claims your insurance premium goes up. This happened to me.

I have deliberately name changed for this because it is incredibly outing. I was sat in my car on a school run at collection when a run away horse pulling an upturned trap behind it belted into my car, the trap bit not the horse. It proceeded completely spooked out of its mind down the road hitting loads of cars of parents parked up, scraping cars and actually smashing windows.

The police were called etc etc but all of us had our insurance increase with the renewal because horses are not insured and the owners certainly were not going to pay.

My advice is contact a body repair shop and get it done. My insurance stayed higher for a few years and I was beyond pissed off at the injustice, especially when it is recorded as my fault because they could not claim against another insurer.

My parents had insurance where you didn't lose your no claims bonus for a single incidence of someone bashing your car in a car park. Of course, it then happened to them twice...

Elieza · 16/10/2021 11:55

@lanthanum that’s a “protected no claims bonus”.

I pay £30 or something extra per year to protect mine. For that very reason. I feel it’s money well spent. I used it once for many thousands of a claim. I’m with direct line insurance. The next year they were good as their word, premium was the same.

I shopped around though as apparently some places used to still give you your same no claims discount % as promised, however because you now have a claim the premium went up!! So not the same thing at all! Sneaky if you ask me.

I once hit a stationary car. I hadn't long been driving and had no paper or pen with me. I didn't know what to do at the time so drove away and then reported it to the police. I didn't even have the registration number of the car I hit but they took all my details so that if it was reported they could link it and I could give my insurance details. I didn't hear anything else about it. It might be worth phoning the police to check if anyone has reported an accident.

Since then I have never gone anywhere without pen and paper but I've never hit anything again!!

I just had to have the same conversation with my husband- parked at work which is a school, front of car bashed in and over £675 of damage. No note left, no cctv. Difference is my husband checked the car and contacted the bodyshop, because I was upset at the state of my beautiful car. No fear, he just helped me sort it and will even drop it off at the shop tomorrow for me. You shouldn't be frightened OP

When you feel up to it ask for a review of the CCTV provisions, at the very least make sure you know the best areas to park in for coverage.

To be fair, even if you have uninsured driver cover, or if you could find the other party and they admitted fault, your premium would still go up.

Fault is used to work out who pays out.

Risk is used to calculate premiums. I've never had a fault accident, have however had three people write off cars outside my house, all stopped, all admitted 100% liability, insurance has doubled after each incident. Was paying almost £1000 a year, aged 40 with 12 years ncb on a 1.6l Ford cmax. Angry
@LubaLuca will insurance cover it even tho I don’t know the car reg of person who hit me?
yes your insurance will sort it out, dont panic. however i would be checking the cars on monday morning as its likely the car responsible will park in the car park again, maybe not in the same place, so go and check the damage to yours carefully as there is likely to be some of their paint on your car too which will also help find them

and now you know where to park so your car is covered by the cameras

DriftingBlue · 16/10/2021 15:28

If the damage is minor, it can be more cost effective to pay out of pocket than to go through your insurance. That is unlikely in this case.

The bigger issue here is definitely marital communication. You have done nothing wrong. You shouldn’t be afraid to tell your husband unpleasant news. You don’t need to be jumping for joy, but planning to just wait until he notices is extremely odd behavior.
