To Ask Why People Buy Bungalows ....

only to build up into the roof, making it nigh on impossible to buy a single storey building for those of us that are disabled and struggle with stairs. You see it so often, a nice little bungalow goes on the market and within a few months the builders are in lifting the roof off, or building into it. If you want a house, then buy a bloody house, and leave the bungalows for those that need them, and no, stair lifts are NOT the answer!

@Twelveshoes yes it is a real issue. Not all houses are suitable for a stairlift. So in reality many people end up living and sleeping in the living room as they have no other choice, or risking serious falls climbing the stairs up to bed every night.

Bungalows are difficult to come by and expensive, they are not built anymore

When was the building of bungalows outlawed?!

We live in one and they've just built more in the village. News of the ban clearly hasn't reached the unforgiving outlands yet.

What's stopping the OP living just in the downstairs bit of the bungalow (if it's previously been converted)?

YANBU.
Also don't see the argument about bungalow gardens being too much for a disabled person - there's such thing are being able to hire a Gardener or help with mowing etc.

Maybe in villages that is true. I am in a City and none have been built here for years.

@ArblemarchTFruitbat

Don't forget that some people buy a bungalow for the long-term - they might be fully mobile at the time of purchase but they're thinking ahead and buying a house they can stay in when they might be less mobile in old age.
Precisely what we’ve done.

A lot of us would prefer not to live in a flat due to noise/space but still have to, why are you any different? Yes we would all love a detached home but that ain't possible. Blame the governments of the past 30 odd years who haven't prioritised housing.

Notjustanymum · 18/10/2021 09:19

Where I live there are only a few bungalows. On the site of one of these, planning has been granted to demolish the bungalow and replace it with four semi-detached 3-bedroom houses and one block of flats with two 2-bed and two 1-bed apartments. The houses are of much smaller size than others in the neighbourhood, there won’t be adequate parking and I hate that the area will become more crowded and urbanised. At the same time though, we do need more housing. It’s difficult when land is ripe for development and I would rather someone just developed the bungalow as a house in this case...
