Urgent Question can anyone help?

My dd(17) is being treated for earwax build up. She has bicarbonate drops and olive oil drops for the past 6 days.

All of a sudden her hearing has completely gone.

Does anyone know if the Minor injuries unit can do anything to help? Google isn’t helping and I’ve been on hold with 111 for the past 34 minutes and my dd is panicking (she has asd) and I don’t want to turn up there and wait if they’re just going to tell us to go to the GP.

Thanks

Who treated her? Best to go back to them.

I had this. It's most likely the drops are softening the wax so it expands which makes hearing go. Lie her down on the ear which the hearing has gone on a warm hot water bottle wrapped in a towel. It will further help the wax soften and run out!

I would go to a&e. RNID recommend getting seen immediately in case it's a symptom of medical emergency. Can't hurt to do so in any case.

Sorry meant to add hearing goes very quite and distorted. Feels like you've gone deaf! Is she having them syringed/suctioned or just treated with drops?

ChilliChaos · 14/10/2021 23:16

The GP. They said they need to try this for 2 weeks to see if it help then they will irrigate(?) them. She’s not in any pain but has total hearing loss in one ear and partial in the other.

If it’s all of a sudden I would get her checked out just to be safe unless it’s likely to worry her more with her asd. They can potentially syringe them then and there.

I would assume if it’s the drips causing it, it would be gradual but I’m not an expert.

I used these drops and found that when the wax softened it swelled up and made hearing muffled, and my face was sore. It only lasted for a couple of days. When I went back to be checked my ear was totally clear and hearing was fine. I hope your daughter has a similar outcome.

I think sometimes your ears can feel worse before they get better, when you put the olive oil in , it can make them feel more blocked, which can feel quite panicky. I was suffering with locked ears last year, and found earol olive oil spray really helped. I thought I was going to have to book to get my ears microsuctioned but the earol sorted my ears out. Because it’s a spray in a measured dose, it didn’t seem to block them. Has she tried massaging the tragus or the Bit just in front of the ear, that might help. Specsavers seem to do micro suction of ear wax so maybe book an appointment with them?

You can try irrigating the ears - I have to do mine very regularly due to narrow ear canals and over production of earwax. Otex do a kit with a bulb thing that you fill with warm water and it will flush out softened wax - or in my case globulous lumps 😂 i was desperate when I tried it, no hearing at all in either ear, and was surprised to find it works really well.

It is so worth getting micro suction done privately in opticians or similar. I was so deaf I had to turn the tv up to 80 but micro suction cleared all the wax , was amazing!

Get on Amazon and order an ear syringe. About £5. After using it I could hear ants farting in the garden it cured my blocked eats so well. Before it arrives, ask her to try running water into the ear when she's in the shower.

Badtasteflump · 15/10/2021 00:28

Don't attempt to syringe her ears yourself with a DIY kit 😲. It's so risky, in my area GPs don't even syringe anymore. My DC had their ears suctioned in an outpatients clinic because it's much less invasive. Syringing can damage the ear drum and lead to life long ear problems with pain, tinitus, balance issues and hearing loss.
