To think DS surely can't have covid again so soon?

DS1 is 16 and had covid at the start of June. Today, he's woken up and has a headache, feels sick, says he feels cold but he has a fever and just seems very tired. He had these symptoms when he had covid but surely he can't have it so soon? He also had his vaccine last Thursday.

Will obviously do a test but how likely is it that it'll be positive?

June is quiet a while ago. Any antibodies he may have had may have waned. Vaccine takes 2 weeks to be fully effective, and you can still catch Covid when vaccinated. I would get him tested, it's rife in young people in our area.

WhatsitWiggle · 14/10/2021 14:03

The antibodies aren't perfect, they reduce his chance of getting it not stop it completely. , With his vaccine only a week ago (first dose I presume?) his immunity will be high - but its not impossible that he's infected again especially as case numbers are high amongst young people at the moment.

It probably isn't Covid, there are lots of nasty things going around at the moment as they do every year.

It doesn't hurt to get a test if you think that's best.

Hope he feels better soon.

Having Covid once doesn't prevent you getting it again, especially given that there are lots of different strains. It could quite easily be something else but generally you're looking at a 50/50 shot of getting it again after four months.

Obviously if it is Covid again, then it's more likely that they will suffer with it in the future because the body isn't producing a strong enough reaction to it - they're likely to have it fairly regularly in the same way people catch cold several times a year.

It probably isn't - but get a PCR for peace of mind. "Freshers Flu" is rampant at the moment, but I have yet to hear of anyone with a positive PCR, even when they have been really ill. Lots of temps, coughs, colds, leading to Pneumonia though :-(

Most likely isn't but get a test, currently still got the tail ends of a horrible cold which was worse than COViD for us

Porcupineintherough · 14/10/2021 14:30

I would have thought not very likely but I know through testing that my antibodies for COVID last less than 8 weeks.

Meowandchoppychops · 14/10/2021 15:07

I have been double vaccinated and was due to have my booster tomorrow but I tested positive on Monday after starting with similar symptoms. Definitely get him tested, it may just be one of these new colds doing the rounds. Hope he's feeling better soon x

It's running rife through my DDs 6th form at the moment along with a really nasty cold and other viruses. Of the people she knows they've all been jabbed, some twice, and several have had it before.
