So it seems Ebay vinted and the likes are holding onto your money until the buyer receives thier item is this a new thing or what.

Its always been like that. Mainly with new sellers.

Coffeey · 13/10/2021 09:11

I'm not getting that with ebay. Have you set your payment schedule to daily or weekly?

ineedaholidayandwine · 13/10/2021 09:13

Yeah I've just noticed that, i have sold a few things but not for quite a while, don't remember it being like that.
My latest sale they held onto the money for i think 5 days.

What a pain I was taken by surprise with this

Ebay you have to set your pay out date, i think you can choose next day. Vinted i think the buyer has to click to say they've received it, i decided to steer clear after reading this as a seasoned ebay seller who has been scammed more than once.

Yeah I'd stay well away from that!

Of course they hold onto your money until the buyer confirms they receive the item, why on earth wouldn't they? If they don't there's nothing to stop someone setting up account, sell lots of high value items that don't exist, withdraw the money and disappear.

Obviously there are buyers who scam the system because of this, but sellers need to factor in a certain percentage of their stock will be lost this way, and price accordingly. That's how shops survive shoplifters - the honest customer pays a bit more.

underneaththeash · 13/10/2021 09:56

With vinted, postage is tracked and if the seller doesn't click after 48 hours, it automatically sends payment. Sellers pay insurance too.

Yes, it is a new process. I've been eBaying for over a decade, and always the buyer paid, you got the money straightaway, then posted off the item.

Now eBay intervenes in the process to take the buyer's money, take out their cut, then pass the balance to you within a few days. I came across it for the first time last week.

Tevion28 · 13/10/2021 10:19

Well hopefully I don't get a awkward buyer.

I stopped selling on ebay because I didn't like the way they have the payments set up.

Yes, EBay have just changed the rules and it is much less user friendly for the seller. We have sold 3 motorcycles separately on Ebay this summer - collection only, deposit by bank transfer and balance in CASH on collection. No problem. Now the rules have changed. You can only put the selling ad in for 7 days, not 10. We put in a new ad for a large item - "cash on collection", as before and though we didn't tick the box to choose it (we went back and checked) - they posted ad with "or best offer" in it. NO! Also, when the bidding finished, they instantly sent the winning bidder an invoice, which he promptly paid, so we didn't get the cash on collection at all (nor the deposit) and had to wait for the money to come through from EBay. It is worrying to hand over a large object without having (yet) received any payment whatsoever and it makes me wonder whether to use a different site next time.
