To hate the morning commute

It’s the worst part of the day and I detest it, always have.

Something about having to get up and leave the house. I’m always fine once I’m there, I just hate the commute.

I hate it too, it feels unnecessarily cruel lol. 1hr40 each way for me all the way across London. No WFH either! Love my job, but very much looking forward to maternity leave soon!

garlictwist · 13/10/2021 07:11

I only have a 20 minute walk to get to work and I hate it. I quite enjoy it in the morning but it's all uphill on the way home, I'm always tired and I just wish I could teleport myself. I realise I am lucky though as it's really not that far at all.

EileenGC · 13/10/2021 07:15

I also love the morning part but hate it in the evenings. The 6/7pms are okay but I don’t think I’ll ever enjoy the 11pm commutes back.

How long is your commute and do you drive or take the train/bus, walk?

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 13/10/2021 07:18

Have you been going into the office for the last two years or were you wfh for a time? Wondering whether it's worse SS you're going back. Dark mornings don't help eother.

Im on mat leave but have about 1h15 commute on the (then) very crowded trains. Not sure what it will be like now or next year.

WakeMeUpin22 · 13/10/2021 07:22

I'm fortunate enough to live a 10min walk from work but I hate the school run. Its 25mins both ways. All good going down hill but bringing the kids up it after a long day at school is pants! We use the car too often.

SpangoDweller · 13/10/2021 07:23

I love the morning commute!

Raininoctober · 13/10/2021 07:29

I’ve had a disrupted two years. I’m a teacher so there was a point when the schools were closed and I went on maternity leave myself last November, but I’ve always hated it. I live 7 miles away so shouldn’t take too long but it takes ages at peak times.

Aww yeah I'm at a school too, I have to be there at 8am sharp - leave the house at 6:15! Those lockdown weeks were short but sweet hey!

Raininoctober · 13/10/2021 07:48

I don’t know how you cope with that long commute!

Yep hate it because of rush hour. I moved closer to work. Pre kids I went in early and now with kids iv adjusted my hour to go in later and come home later.

Belledan1 · 13/10/2021 08:00

I am back at work 1 to 2 weeks and felt really grumpy at all the road works etc. Out the house 12 hours. But then some people who get the same bus as me (it's a once a day direct bus there and back) get it every day so I realised I am lucky . Dont know how i did it when was full time in the office.

Belledan1 · 13/10/2021 08:00

Sorry that should be 1 to 2 days a week.

Squirrelblanket · 13/10/2021 08:03

I hated it too, it's my main reason for being glad I'm still WFH. I live on one of the least reliable train lines in the country so every morning it was just really stressful wondering if/when I'd actually get there.

CaptainCorelli · 13/10/2021 08:04

I used to hate it when I did every day - 45 minutes but lots of stopping and starting. I miss having time to myself in the car now I wfh 100%. It marks the start and end of the day whereas now I just wander downstairs. I would like to go back to doing it 1-2 a week but my local office is closed.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/10/2021 08:07

Hate it too! Not so much it, as the time it takes from my day. Going to our main office takes me 1.5 hours. But I like going once im there! There’s a much closer small office but it doesn’t have the same vibe/ opportunities to mix with colleagues.

ComtesseDeSpair · 13/10/2021 08:45

Is cycling an option, even for a part of the way? I love my commute - 8 miles and I cycle in about 40 minutes. It’s the reason I chose to go back to the office some days. It would take me over an hour to do it by tube and train and I do dislike the odd day when I have to do it that way.

carolinesbaby · 13/10/2021 08:47

Once I have left the house I am fine. It's forcing myself up and out that's the issue. I find that 20-30 minutes on my own in the car is good for getting in the right mindset for work, putting all my family issues to one side for 8 hours. I find when I WFH I'm still have asleep when I sit down at my desk, and I can't work if the house isn't tidy or there's washing up or laundry to be done, it's too distracting.

YouTubeAddict · 13/10/2021 08:50

I used to hate it too. Especially in the winter. Nothing more depressing than getting out of bed in the dark to resentfully get dressed and then to arrive home in the dark. Would you ever consider a career change so you can WFH?

Aposterhasnoname · 13/10/2021 08:51

I love commuting, it’s the best part of the day. On my own in the car, music blasting out, whizzing (or even crawling, eithers fine) down the motorway. No one trying to talk to me, complain about my choice of music, back seat drive etc. bloody lovely. Bonus points if it’s nice weather and I can have the windows open.

Peggytheredhen · 13/10/2021 08:53

I hear you OP. I am currently WFH and it's the best thing about it. I have spent many hours of my life driving to work or getting buses in freezing rain in the past.

Raininoctober · 13/10/2021 08:55

I’d love to WFH but realistically no skills outside of teaching that would pay as well. Can’t cycle - have to do nursery drop off.
