To be weirdly depressed about the end of the Craig Bond era? (no spoilers)

Not so much as AIBU as I know IBU, but...

Completely unexpectedly, I'm really upset. I'm not any kind of Bond or Daniel Craig super-fan - I've only actually liked 3 of his 5 Bond films, and I'm not big into Bond generally. I think I'm feeling this way because I'm almost the same age as Daniel Craig.

When he started as Bond, he was young and fit and so was I (relatively speaking to now, I mean - I'm no Eva Green 😉). This is not a spoiler, as it's been in a lot of the film publicity but, in No Time To Die, there are many references to him being old and his career nearing its end, and DC does look old in it. It's really brought home to me that I am ageing and that my own working life is in its last decade.

I know this is totally ridiculous. I'm an HCP and work with older and ill people all the time, so it's not like ageing comes as a big surprise. And I deal with people who are ill and dying every day at work, and cope with it. Yet for some reason, a fictional spy getting older has made me feel really down. I need to get a grip of my Gen X angst, don't I?

I was shocked to see how small and old he looked. Not very James Bond like at all. I vote for Sam Heugan from Outlander. He'd be great.

I think he looks older than 51, which is how old he was when NTTD was being filmed. I definitely still would with his Bond character though 😉

DC in real life did not do it for me at the premiere - hated the greasy hair gelled look. I love men in bold colours, but that pink did not suit him, especially in tight velvet. He looked liked an over-stuffed cushion.

He looked liked an over-stuffed cushion.

Well, I’d happily plump him up.

@TellySavalashairbrush

The living Daylights was Roger Moore's last film as Bond and he was really looking his age by then, I think it's very similar with Daniel Craig, anymore films and he would not have been as believable. I too was very subdued after watching the film (life long Bond fan) and am fearful of what the plans will be for the next film. I think the days of Bond as we all know him are sadly over.
I agree. I’m feeling rather heavy hearted about what may become of it.

Anyone as long as it’s not the female who played 007 alongside DC this time round.

She was rather miscast and couldn’t act.

I went to the Casino Royale premiere as a beautiful young thing. I er, don't look like that now, and I can't remember the last time I had a night out in London. I feel really sad too - it feels like the end of an era.

Bluntness100 · 14/10/2021 20:53

I noticed he wasn’t as fit in this movie, more just thin, in previous movies he had been really ripped, I think he jist didn’t want to do it again and fair enough.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 14/10/2021 20:54

Can we try to avoid spoilers, because I've put in the thread title that there aren't any, and I don't want to spoil the film for anyone?

How exciting! Was it amazing?

I'm sad too and didn't think I would be. 16 years is a good run, though.

I'm curious who'll be next. I hope it isn't a woman, though. I'd fear a repeat of DW, which really did not work for me.

Callmecordelia · 14/10/2021 21:03

Yes it was! It was huge, I don't want to give the wrong impression because thousands of people must have gone. All three cinemas on Leicester Square were showing it, and the red carpet sort of split depending on which ticket you had.

DH was working for a sponsor. I was feet from Daniel Craig, and then we had to follow the red carpet over a sort of bridge to a lower tier cinema Grin. There was a bar of green and blacks on each chair. We went to the sponsors after party and ended up dancing with the MD.

It was a great night. I think we stayed at the Premier Inn round the corner and checked out at the same time as Zoe Ball.

Never really been a fan of his. He just struts around pouting. And he has been an old man for a long time, IMHO he should have been booted years ago.

He was actually one of the youngest Bonds when he started, and would have stepped down at 52, if it hadn't been for Covid - also relatively young. I agree that he looks as if he's had a hard paper round, but I think that's accentuated by his having been quite young in the first - and best - film. Plus, he had smoking sexual chemistry with Eva Green, which hasn't been reproduced in any of the subsequent films.
