To start a new life somewhere different?

On paper, this should be the best time of my life. I'm single, mid-40s, one adult DD who has just bought a house 100 miles away, reasonably financially comfortable, no ties.

But I'm so, so fed up. I hate where I live - 8 miles from the nearest town, 25 from a city, with absolutely nothing going on locally. My 3 bed house feels too big for just me, I seem to be spending my life doing a job I dislike, purely to pay for a house I dislike, then staying in bed all day on my days off because getting up just seems pointless.

I'm genuinely considering selling up and buying a lovely modern flat, somewhere in a city, and starting a new life.

Assuming this isn't a ridiculous idea, any suggestions of where I could move to? My wishlist is a city, good transport links, decent shops, museums etc, and bonus points for being reasonably close to the coast. My budget is around £170k for ideally a 2 bed flat, which rules a lot of places 'down south' out.

Truro is nice but it depends on what sort of area of the country you would want to live in.

@ANameChangeAgain

I would go for York, I've even found a little place for you in Mad Alice Lane, Petergate www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/112249766#/media?channel=RES_BUY&id=media1. Please do it!!
Much as I love the location and street name, sadly it doesn't have parking, which is a definite requirement!

Sounds a fab idea Glasgow is the best city in the world

maddy68 · 16/10/2021 09:15

Do it. Have you considered moving up north. Beautiful places and much cheaper (you can get a house for that money let alone a flat ).

Or France (they are still being fairly accomodating post brexit )

Get near the coast so you can go for nice walks by yourself
But near a busy town so you can venture there too

I moved countries last year Zero regrets

Rockbird · 16/10/2021 09:20

Oh what a fabulous idea. I would go to Scotland in a heartbeat.

Hopeisallineed · 16/10/2021 09:27

@maddy68 great thread reading! 😂

Wonderful and exciting idea. Enjoy your weekend browsing properties.

York is great and close to moorland and not too far from the sea. I was there a couple of weeks ago walking the Roman walls and eating fish and chips. I then drove 25 minutes and was walking on moorland and visited a rather lovely waterfall.

Norwich.

Lovely city, loads going on, cinemas, theatres, galleries, historic centre, easy access to lovely countryside, broads and coast (from Suffolk to North Norfolk).

Massive hospital.

Plenty in your price range, even terrace houses within an easy walk of the city centre.

Leeds city centre has some gorgeous flats in your budget. It’s a great city, two large hospitals, St James and Leeds General Infirmary, great travel links all over the country via the train station or local airport, LBA. A short drive takes you to some beautiful area,s such as Haworth, skipton and us northern folk are super friendly

Reallyimeanreally2022 · 16/10/2021 09:55

How do you see your life changing in the new city op?

Genuine question. If you don’t do anything now other than work and then stay at home despite presumably having friends in the vicinity (hopefully!) and watch tv, what will you actually Do different in a city where you’ll presumably know no one

RestingStitchFace · 16/10/2021 10:00

Lived in Newcastle for 5 years and loved it. Really buzzing place.

If you are looking for a smaller city, Norwich might be just the ticket. Not on the coast, but a short drive. And lovely part of the country.

MyOtherProfile · 16/10/2021 10:01

Great idea! Just make sure you have a plan for your new place for how to meet people. Join clubs, Facebook groups, walking groups or whatever you have an interest in. You're too young to stay home alone all day on your day off. Good luck!

How old is your dd? Are you close?

Reallyimeanreally2022 · 16/10/2021 10:12

You mention you dislike your nursing job. Would you still do nursing then?

Sally090807 · 16/10/2021 10:20

I’d say Norwich, great train links with Cambridge and London. Not too far to drive to the North Norfolk Coast.

HorsesHoundsandHills · 16/10/2021 10:22

Newcastle or Sunderland, both on the metro, so easy access to coast/ airport, plenty going on, friendly bunch, get choice of nice flats for that budget. Easy to get involved, especially as a nurse, there’s plenty of socialising with work friends.

MonicaGellerBing · 16/10/2021 10:27

Northumberland beautiful scenery close to Newcastle and property much cheaper than down south

Right on the seafront at Roker, near St Peters metro station, own garage, sea views. Roker beach is lovely.
