Why does my 5 year old only cough at night and when the temperature changes

She's completely well otherwise it's just at night she coughs very badly. It's a chesty cough and whenever we go out.

The exact same thing happened last year at this time all winter. Drs gave inhaler which didn't help and we recorded her diet. Nothing caused the coughing and it just stopped when winter was over?

Have an appointment with dr tomorrow does anyone have any clue so I could suggest it?

Many thanks :)

Allergy to dust mites in bedding / soft furnishings.
Asthma triggered by cold air?

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 11/10/2021 20:35

My eldest daughter (now 20) has asthma that is affected by the cold, the damp and her sleeping position. She has to sleep relatively propped up. If she goes out into a cold, damp day she'll need her inhaler immediately. If I were you I'd see the GP again.

somewhereoverthechipshop · 11/10/2021 20:36

Definitely sounds like asthma

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 11/10/2021 20:36

Ah - see. You've got an appointment. Also seconding about the dust allergy.

Fere · 11/10/2021 20:37

Get her tested for asthma.

Brollywasntneededafterall · 11/10/2021 20:37

Window open.
Asthmatic ds - absolute wonders... Hardly used his inhaler last winter...

bloodywhitecat · 11/10/2021 20:37

Asthma. Will she tolerate a scarf over her nose and mouth while out in cold air? Which inhaler did she try? My DD doesn't respond at all to some of the preventers so had to try a few before she found a regime that worked for her.

PinkCricket · 11/10/2021 20:37

Asthma here too. We needed the preventer inhaler regularly when she wasnt coughing to see the reduction in coughing though.

shouldistop · 11/10/2021 20:38

Asthma and / or allergies

WiddlinDiddlin · 11/10/2021 20:38

At night.. or 'when lying down'...

For years as a kid I'd cough for a while after lying down and I'd definitely cough when going from a warm area out into the cold, or if there was a strong cold wind I was walking into.

Dx at 28 with heart problems, congenital, missed my whole life.

Allergies and asthma are also potential answers, as are undoubtedly, lots of other things but do push to investigate, serious things can and do get missed!

Elisheva · 11/10/2021 20:38

It’s asthma, did she have a blue inhaler last time? She needs a brown one as well.

Rainbowheart1 · 11/10/2021 20:38

Asthma

Okbye · 11/10/2021 20:39

Asthma. Mines ALWAYS worse when it’s changing seasons to cold (or ridiculously hot) but I can manage it with inhalers. Can you see an asthma nurse via your gp?

GoodnightGrandma · 11/10/2021 20:39

Night time cough is classic asthma. My DD cough used to drive us mental !

thefirstmrsrochester · 11/10/2021 20:42

Another saying asthma. DS (now 17) only had the nighttime symptoms relieved when he got prescribed a green inhaler.

monkeysox · 11/10/2021 20:56

Asthma 100%

Tempnamechange123 · 11/10/2021 21:04

Classic asthma

Danikm151 · 11/10/2021 21:12

Allergy based asthma. My cough would get worse when the central heating was turned on.

TaraR2020 · 11/10/2021 21:13

Agreed!

MordredsOrrery · 11/10/2021 21:14

We have a similar thing with DC2. Various inhalers, nothing worked.

A nurse recently suggested piriton to dry up the nasal drip and this works fairly regularly, although sadly not every time.

We've yet to find an allergy, have anti-allergy bedding, etc.

Keeping the air warm with a heater in the night if she starts coughing can also help.

This has happened every year since she was a few months old and I'm at my wits end with trying to get it to go away.

Stopsnowing · 11/10/2021 21:16

Sounds like asthma. We are now on a pink inhaler after the blue and orange ones didn’t work

Meggie2008 · 11/10/2021 21:17

Agreed with all above. I can't sleep with the windows open or I get stuck with a barking cough all day

ZoBo123 · 11/10/2021 21:27

Sounds like asthma. Mine is the opposite to others on here though. I need to have the heating off for a couple of hours before bed and the window open for fresh air. If the central heating is on I feel stuffy and struggle to breathe whilst sleeping, fine sitting on a chair etc.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 11/10/2021 21:31

Oh wow my dd gets this too!! Has had teachers telling me about it but doctor last year kept saying it is just a habit.

Newnormal99 · 11/10/2021 21:31

My daughter used to have asthma November - March.
