I don’t drink alcohol or caffeine. I exercise regularly and eat healthily. My BMI is good. I’ve actually got a good life and nothing to worry about. I’m 47 and wake every night with crippling anxiety. It can be about anything and I completely blow whatever it is out of proportion so I can’t get back to sleep. It’s destroying me and making me feel anxious during the day as well. What more can I do?

Are you in perimenopause? Hormones decreasing are a big factor in anxiety and sleep for women.

Phyllis321 · 10/10/2021 15:43

Peri, definitely. I became cripplingly anxious and prone to insomnia. You may want to investigate HRT or similar.

dirtysonofagun · 10/10/2021 16:11

I did think it could be peri menopause. I’ve done absolutely everything I can think of to help but it’s the same every night. I’d definitely be keen to give HRT a go as nothing else has helped.

Can you speak to your GP? You sound like I did with generalized anxiety disorder. I'm getting treatment for it now and I'm already much happier. It does get better.

Sounds like me, after having another moan at my friend they said they thought I needed to see my go..so I did and I’m on meds for anxiety and depression. I’m 48 so they couldn’t rule out it being hormonal. On theses meds for 6 weeks, and I sleep more, wake up in night but now I go back to sleep..I’m less over reactive in work situations, I worry less about adult DS who I did spend sleepless nights when he went out. I’m basically coping better with the crap life throws at me

Go to your GP and see if they will refer you for CBT or another talking therapy. There are also some really good free apps online, thatctrain you in relaxation methods.

I’m 47 - awake at 4.30 most mornings with crippling anxiety but, as a Sunday morning treat, woke having a panic attack at 2.30 this morning. I feel your pain, it’s awful. Admittedly I do have work related hideousness that is a very identifiable cause of my anxiety, but sending a hug.

Maybe have a look at some distress tolerance skills and sensory grounding. TIPP or gottmans tasks could be a good place to start as part of the evening routine.

Same with poor sleep, insomnia and anxiety. I’ve found nothing to help me at all.literally just downloaded a tapping app to try.

Stompythedinosaur · 10/10/2021 18:02

Anxiety is related to thinking patterns. CBT is a really good therapy for anxiety.

Meditation

I have hideous anxiety and struggle at the nighttime as well, I can recommend a weighted blanket, a coloured light (purple works well for me) and background noise (I use ASMR or white noise depending on how I’m feeling).

I really hope you find what works for you, it’s so difficult!
