How do you call in sick?

Nc for this. Just want to find out what happens to other people as in my workplace (school teacher) we literally have to phone the headteacher on his mobile and speak about our illness in depth and he then tells us to email cover in. Are other workplaces like this too? Would you classify this as an intimidating tactic? Other places I’ve worked in don’t require you to do this. If you’re naturally anxious it will stop you calling in sick.

Or alternatively, the teacher can just opt to get the class to read from a class text book….

Only if they're old enough to be able to read! 😂

@Macaroni46 - as the comment related to secondary school cover supervisors, I would hope the majority of the class could read! 😂

Text or call my team lead...

I send a what's app message normally but I can see how some places might prefer a more formal phone call. What do you mean by email cover? You have to arrange a replacement teacher?

It’s means you have to email in all the work for the classes for that day. It’s a pain so most of the time I drag myself in because in the long run it just creates more work.

I'm a teacher too (secondary), and have never experienced what you describe. Where I work, you send an email to cover copying in line manager, giving the most basic details, eg stomach bug/high temperature/flu-like symptoms/child is unwell, then a separate email to line manager with details of cover work. I have sometimes been even more vague about details of absence because i didn't want to share personal details with the cover admin person. I would have been prepared to give details to my line manager but no one asked for information - they know that people dont take the piss so were willing to trust that I had a good reason for absence. Your system sounds weird, as if you need permission from the HT to be ill. This would be unusual in secondary school but not sure how things work in primary schools
