I'm going to admit I was ignorant of the situation in Lebanon until today.
I feel so much for the people there, and how scary this must be.

Also hoping this is not the direction the UK is heading

Have a good read on the history of the area, if you do you may see why the comparison is bonkers and probably insensitive to the situation there.

Yummypumpkin · 10/10/2021 00:41

As @maddening says.

LibertyKnickers · 10/10/2021 00:43

There is no comparison. Be glad of that every day.

Thirded

Lived there for a few years had hardly any electricity in the 90s most people had generators then, feel so sorry this has happened.

RuleOfCat · 10/10/2021 10:13

Ooh, where did you live Molly?
DD lived there for 15 months just before the pandemic. Even in 2018/19 Beirut had 3 hours a day without electricity, other cities had even longer outages. As Molly says, most houses or buildings had a diesel generator during the cuts, but they wouldn't power lots of stuff (the elevator, for example, or washing machines). This economic crisis has been brewing since the Lebanese lira decoupled from the USdollar in 2019. The ruling class are corrupt and young people have tried to end the corruption, but it's too entrenched. The headquarters of the state electricity company were destroyed in the 2020 blast, it was only a matter of time before the supply collapsed altogether. Lebanon is damn close to becoming a failed state, and it's horrible to watch.
So are there parallels to the British situation? Only in the most trivial sense. Britain has spent the last few years shooting itself in the foot in a very Lebanese manner, but there's a long, long way to go yet to being a failed state.

@RuleofCat

We lived in Adma first and then moved to Rabiey near the British Embassy. Electricity was a nightmare when the Israelis blew up our power stations while they were bombing while we were there.

Why was your daughter there. My DH was working there and I worked there too till we left.

amusedtodeath1 · 10/10/2021 23:59

We are being hit by the same things that caused the problems in the Lebanon, but we are at such an advantage comparitively, that the effects are very unlikely to be as severe here.

Power and coal production has been low because of Covid and now any storage capacity is depleted, so everyone is playing catch-up. It will work itself out eventually.

MojoMoon · 11/10/2021 00:18

Lebanon's crisis is a financial one with the almost complete collapse of their currency

That is why they don't have any electricity. They don't have any money to buy fuel with.

Am no fan of Boris and the Tories but the UK is not like Lebanon.
