Can you talk to me about your big giant babies please

DigOlBick · 09/10/2021 11:24

I’m having a giant baby and I’m actually quite terrified about it! I’m 34+4 and measuring 40 weeks. He was nearly 7 pounds at my last growth scan 2 weeks ago.

I’m exhausted, I can’t breath and I’m in a lot of pain. I’m hoping for an early induction but wondering if maybe a csection is the way to go.

Not sure what to do! Would just like to hear from some mums who birthday big whoppers and what it was like.

this was in 2010 as hes 11 now but at 32 weeks he was 9lb already and 20 inches

he came 8 days late at 11lb 10oz and 29 inches, yes 29 inches with enormous feet
i am big for a woman as im 6ft and was 19 st odd at the time as i went enormous very early in pregnancy but the size of him as a whole shocked the hospital staff.

hes 11(just) now and 5ft4.5 and 11 st 6 and size mens 8 feet, nearly a 9
he was massive from birth and just went up and up

i will be frank and tmi here but i did have a bad birth as he was that big he got stuck with his head out and just getting that out tore me very bad.
i had a ventuse that didnt work, forceps that they couldn't get "in" as he filled that space and it was already torn
in the end my mother and a midwife pulled him out with a lot of force.

everything came out after him and i mean everything. uterus, bowel and the whole "foof" canal

after 10 mins of having him i was in theatre having a major operation as i lost so much blood and to put everything back in
i was fine after a few days recovery but my pelvic floor never recovered

@MrsArchchancellorRidcully

Trust your body. Half the battle is being positive. If you think the north will be difficult then it's likely will be. Was your first natural? No serious complications? Likely this one will do same. Trust yourself to do this.

If you are birthing in hospital then you are literally in the best place to deal with any issues. You could even home birth even in the circumstances. My first birth was horrendous and Dd was tiny.

Really- be positive. And Jesus wept.
Tomnooktoldmeto · 09/10/2021 18:22

I had 2 planned sections DD 41+5 weeks 9lb4oz Ds they took out early as he was measuring 44+ weeks at 36 weeks so delivered at 38 weeks 8lb 10oz

I’m not quite 5ft and small pelvis, I worked in theatre and had seen the outcome of shoulder dystocia and wasn’t prepared to risk it

C section is much better in planned circumstances

We were told with our 2nd that we were having a humongous baby. In the end she was only 3.2kg and slipped out like a baby giraffe.

These measurements can be horribly inaccurate.

Bloody Hell @picklemewalnuts At one point during my first delivery, my parents were told to anticipate the worst outcome for DC1 and for me.

Why else do you think so many women died in childbirth?

And I say this despite generally being a complete hippy who was all set for a drug free delivery, and would have got there, had the particular complication of size and stuckness and back-to-back not arised (DC1 conveniently moved back to back just as I started labour).

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 09/10/2021 19:52

I was a week overdue. I had three lots of gel and no progress. Obygn wanted to rupture my membranes but I said no. They said he was big - 8lbs. What I had was basically an ELCS. He was 10lb 11oz and 24”

Mylittlecoconuts · 09/10/2021 19:55

My prem first-born was estimated at 4lbs but was actually 2lbs at birth (31 weeks - c section)

My second was born at 41 weeks and estimated at 8 odd lbs but was just under 10lbs and I had her with a forceps delivery as I just couldn't push her out.

The section was by far the easiest to recover from. The second birth was horrendous to recover from and took a year before things went back to some kind of normality.

AndStand · 09/10/2021 19:58

My second was predicted to be around 8lb. Turned out to be 9lb13oz.
He did get a bit stuck and so the midwife did a McRoberts Manoeuvre, but I had no pain relief, no stitches and a really chubby baby. His size was a big surprise!

PumpkinPie2016 · 09/10/2021 20:00

My son was 9lb 6oz born exactly on time. I am only 5ft 2in tall and small in frame. Ended up with an emergency c-section as he was too big for me to deliver naturally. If I could go back, I would have an elective section.

That said, my sister was my mum's 3rd baby. She was 9lb and my mum said it was the easiest of the three deliveries.

My dad, no word of a lie, was an astoni
astonishing 13lb 9oz 😲😳 born naturally and my grandma wasn't a big lady. He was her 4th baby but all the others were average sizes between 6lb and 7.5lb.

CosmicComfort · 09/10/2021 20:08

I’ve had 9lb 4oz and 10lb7oz boys.

First one was forceps so second popped out relatively quickly, pelvic floor is completely fucked and have had multiple prolapse issues but had issues after the first I think due to forceps and then cervical cancer after second so can’t blame it all on big babies.

I was measuring big with DS2 so was induced on my due date.

weegiemum · 09/10/2021 20:09

My eldest was 9lb12oz and OP, the hardest of my 3 births, she was a ventouse delivery. As I'd never given birth before I'd no idea if it was easy or hard, comparatively. It was certainly harder than the others. She was just under 40 weeks. Ds was 9lb3 at 10 days early and dd2 was 7lb15oz at 36+6 (induced for other reasons), so I'm quite glad I never went to term.

Scbchl · 09/10/2021 20:11

My third and only boy was 9lb 9.5, I woke i the night pushing involuntarily. Managed to get to hospital. I did do a bit more pushing than with my 8lber and they did hit the alarm incase he got stuck but he didn't and he was ALOT easier and less painful than my 6lber.

Biscoffee · 09/10/2021 20:12

@steff13

#2 son weighed 10 lb. I had him vaginally, no pain relief, had a few stitches, but it was not any more difficult than my other two deliveries.
I had one that weighed 11lbs and it was as you’ve described.

I do believe though that I felt the effect of it as I got older and now I’m mid 60’s my lady bits could be in better condition.

HazelBite · 09/10/2021 20:25

If you are that worried and concerned ask for a section.
Expecting twins many years ago I was told it would be "easy" for me to give birth to them naturally. I was horrified as I was so tired from carrying the weight of them around that I didn't feel I would have the strength or energy to push them out.
Fate intervened, and I was admitted with high blood pressure and they were born by section at 36 weeks (combined weght 16lbs) much to my relief and comfort.
Make your wishes known OP if you would be happier with a section say so, I think it is overlooked how tiring carrying a big baby is.

Sparklehead · 09/10/2021 20:28

I’ve had 3 babies, 8lb 4oz, 10lbs, 10.4lbs. I really didn’t notice any difference in terms of giving birth with the different sizes of my baby’s. I actually tore with my smallest baby, but not with the other two. I wouldn’t worry to much, what will be, will be.

Sexnotgender · 09/10/2021 20:30

@misskatamari

I honestly think position is a bigger consideration than size in how a labour goes. DD was 7lb2 - back to back and a nightmare! Ds was 10lb3 - home birth with gas an air, no stitches, much much easier labour. Honestly it was fine. He was born at 41 weeks exactly, as i didn't want to be induced/have a sweep etc. I trusted he'd arrive when he was ready and he did. I did hypnobirthing which i also think was a huge help in keeping calm etc.
Couldn’t agree more.

I’ve never had a big baby. DD number 1 was only 6lb 1, but she was back to back and an absolute fucking nightmare birth.

I then had a 15 year age gap. DS was 7lb 15 and birth was less than 4 hours from first twinge to babe in arms.
DD 2 was similar.

Even after 15 years my body absolutely knew what to do.

Yubaba · 09/10/2021 20:36

DS1 was 9lb5oz and he was by far my easiest delivery.
I had him at home with just gas and air.
The other 2 were 7lb11 and 7lb 13 so he was the outlier in the middle.
He’s 12 and 5ft8 with size 9 feet so he’s still big!

Mummyme87 · 09/10/2021 20:44

Hi an emergency CS with first at 41/40 due to infection mainly and got stuck at 9cm, he was 10lb 5oz.
Second was induced at 39+4 for likely late onset diabetes, acute polyhydramnios, big baby, had an normal birth, albeit
With a 3rd degree year and lost 2.2litres. But healed well and would have another VBAC with a 3rd.

Thatsplentyjack · 09/10/2021 20:53

My first was 8lb 8, not that big. Second boy was 9lbs 15 and popped out in 5 hours start to finishe,no pain killers (not my decision), third was a girl 10lb 6. Again no pain killers (again not my choice) she did get stuck and I was pushing for around 2 hours. They had the forceps out but I the thought of th terrified me, eventually the midwife helped her out with her hands. I won't lie, it was much more painful than my other births, but I do have a strong suspicious she was on her side or possibly her back and they didn't tell me. I didn't ask because I couldn't at the time and was so relieved it was over after.
You will be fine OP. Also the growth scans are notorious for being wrong.

Quornflakegirl · 09/10/2021 20:56

My twins measured 6lbs at 34 weeks and came out that size, which is big for twins at that gestation.

Blossomandbee · 09/10/2021 21:09

My dd2 was estimated as around 7lbs at 35 weeks after a growth scan as I was measuring huge. She was 10lbs and it was a lovely quick labour, not particularly painful and no stitches.
Big size does not always mean pain or problems so try not to worry. Scans are also rarely accurate and even how they feel is not an exact science. I was told my 9lb 6oz DS felt very small and measured small for dates.

WayneBruce · 09/10/2021 21:14

10lb and a massive head! Ended up with a ECS but that was my funky pelvis rather than baby.
My recovery was fine. On my feet 12 hours later (thank you midwives).
Best thing about a big baby is they get to a decent weight quicker that allows them to sleep longer between feeds.

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 09/10/2021 21:19

DS (second child) was 10lb1 and an easy birth (4 hours from waters breaking, just TENS and gas & air plus water birth). No tearing or anything and faster recovery than with DD 3.5 years earlier (8lb10).

BellsaRinging · 09/10/2021 21:21

Ds2 was 10 lbs 5. No warning Bout him being big in advance and I had a natural birth (water mostly) with no painkillers. Was fine, and had an episiotomy but healed well.
