Swollen cheek due to infected root canal ? I often get a swelling on my gum , Like a boil; which the dentist says is pus with nowhere to go as I have a permanent filling inserted into root canal treated tooth .
There's no way this swelling is going to reduce us there? I look hideous and have an important occasion ??

Are you taking antibiotics?

couscousqueen · 08/10/2021 13:02

No. Waiting for dentist to ring me

I shouldn't think so, no. I had an infected root canal once that wasn't under a filling; and my face looked deformed for about a week, but the first two days were BAD. I was at a hotel for work, and the staff kept trying to call me an ambulance. Someone stopped me in Tesco and thought I was a victim of domestic abuse Blush.

Antibiotics will help a bit, but it tends to take them 24 hours or so to kick in, at least.

couscousqueen · 08/10/2021 13:08

Thanks. Dentist rang me back and will prescribe an antibiotic. I will
Double dose when I pick it
Up and hope for the best . Would a poultice work? I'm Drinking loads of water . There's nothing else I can do is there

I know you’re desperate, but don’t double dose on the antibiotics. It’s a really bad idea.

HollowTalk · 08/10/2021 13:12

Could you get away with wearing a mask all day?

TakeYourFinalPosition · 08/10/2021 13:13

I will
Double dose when I pick it
Up and hope for the best

I really wouldn't do that! You need it to heal properly.

What's the event?

Maybe an ice pack, with a tea-towel around it; on your face for as much as you can to try and reduce some of the swelling?

Or could you hide behind a mask? 😬

Wolfiefan · 08/10/2021 13:14

You must take the antibiotics as described.

Playdoughcaterpillar · 08/10/2021 13:14

Might an ice pack take some swelling down?

BookFiend4Life · 08/10/2021 13:46

A poultice might help, it probably won't hurt depending on the ingredients. I would at least try loads of ice.

PattiPritell · 08/10/2021 13:50

It depends what double dose means. don't take two pills at once but if it's 4 hourly you can squeeze a second dose in tonight eg stay up a bit later til say 11 and take the next dose then I would do that.

amusedtodeath1 · 08/10/2021 13:51

Take the antibiotics as prescribed, don't double up. Hot salt water mouthwash always works for me, it could improve before your event.Flowers

couscousqueen · 08/10/2021 13:58

Thanks. I was
Going to take double the prescribed dose inotially.
Please tell me more about salt water and
Poultices ?

Doubling the dose for antibiotics is old advice, I wouldn’t recommend it. I’d do the usual advice for any swelling - cold compress applied externally, anti-inflammatories (if you can take them), salt rinses might help…but no you can’t really speed up this process. It’ll heal in time with the antibiotics.

amysmom · 08/10/2021 14:19

I’ve just had teeth removed and look like a hamster but Ice certainly helps and ibuprofen - go careful with the antibiotics or else you’ll get side effects from those if you double dose such as tummy issues which might ruin your day - on a positive I attended an event the day after my surgery and I found just being honest stopped all the questions but sending you hugs as it took a lot of guts for me to go out feeling so swollen but infact carrying on was the best thing qnd I had a great time and lots of sympathy too ;-) xx

amysmom · 08/10/2021 14:21

Salt water rinses are brilliant 🤩 I pop a teaspoon or 2 of salt with half a cup of warm water and gently hold it on the infection for as long as I can take it and spit it out - don’t swallow it should draw out the infection over time x

couscousqueen · 08/10/2021 14:28

So glad I am wearing a mask

OP posts:
picklemewalnuts · 08/10/2021 14:34

Yes, rinse and swoosh with hot salt water as often as possible. Is there any chance of a head forming to allow it to drain? I have a long standing one that I drain regularly. It doesn't make my cheek swell though.

Helenluvsrob · 08/10/2021 14:39

Wear a mask and blame the pandemic. ?

couscousqueen · 08/10/2021 14:42

Haha great idea @Helenluvsrob 😂

OP posts:
couscousqueen · 08/10/2021 14:42

Do you physically drain it @picklemewalnuts ?

OP posts:
picklemewalnuts · 08/10/2021 14:46

Yes. I press, pull slightly, or use a water flosser near it. But mine is near the edge of the gum, so perhaps easier to drain. I don't know where yours is!

picklemewalnuts · 08/10/2021 14:47

I'm a bit gung ho, too. I'd use a toothpick to run around the edge of the gum and see if I could lift it open a bit.

AdamandMadame · 08/10/2021 14:52

If you do this @couscousqueen, can you film it and post it in Sporner Corner? 😂

Good luck and hope swelling goes down in time for your event.

Timeforwinterclothes · 10/10/2021 10:54

When the abscess comes to a head, it will be at the root line. They can spectacularly burst. There is no problem with double dosing the first dose. Hot salt mouthwash may bring it to a head quicker.
