Is it reasonable to be on your feet for 6+ hours a day

If you have a job that involves walking pretty much solidly for 6 hours did it affect your health?
Three years in (although I had a break for maternity) and I still get pain in my shoulders, back and legs. As for my poor feet...
A couple of other people I work with have similar issues and there's a part of me that wonders how good it is for your health to be walking for 6 hours.
Just wondering how other people found it and if there's a way to stop being in constant pain.

Proper shoes, have worked in retail for twenty years and my last job required proper dress shoes for mangers. My feet were in a right state when I left. My job now needs safety shoes and it is actual heaven.

I used to work with horses. 6 hours on your feet would be an early finish.

In retail. 7-4 shift. Arrive 6.45. Take in delivery. Unload approx 40 boxes of clothes and hanging items from delivery lorry.
Then up and down 3 flights of stairs to take stock to stockroom. Armfulls of clothes or tote boxes(the large plastic crates).
There is no lift btw.
Next job could be stripping down an entire wall and remerchandising, involving going up and down ladders and again moving a lot of stock. Another task can be putting away the shoe delivery. Ladders again.
Interspersed with running backwards and forwards to serve on the till.
Go for bus home. Get home about 5 if lucky

Another teacher here, and though there's a ton of walking (no "own" classrooms in most Australian secondary schools) This means moving between classrooms several times a day, carrying everything with me. I prefer that to to what lockdown teaching has done to my back.

Low, shoes. DMs are good.

I'd find it knackering being on my bum sat down for 6 hours a day!
The body is meant to move.

@Rosebel

It's retail. Picking for home shopping and a ridiculously high target so yes it's constant walking. I do have proper shoes, provided by work and they are decent fit properly etc. I think I must be really unlucky to be in so much pain then. It could be a combination of heavy lifting and pushing a heavy load I suppose (24 cans of dog food and several 5 litre bottles of water can be very heavy). On the plus side my step count is incredibly high.
Are you lifting as per your manual handling training? Ie As per the TILE (/or TILEO);assessment?

How about being a school caretaker.
This is a close relative of mine's Facebook post 21224 steps !!

I've worked in retail all my life .12 hour shifts are the norm. Christmas is horrific but I agree with everyone else . Proper shoes - Skechers are popular for good reason as are Fit Flops . I used to always buy Clark's but now prefer Skechers.

toocold54 · 08/10/2021 22:10

I'd say it's healthier than a job sat on your arse for 6+ hours a day

I agree.
Sitting down or standing still for long periods but walking and being active all day is what we are designed to do.

Obviously if you’re not used to it you will find it difficult at first so as PPs have said you need to make sure you have supportive, comfortable footwear.

toocold54 · 08/10/2021 22:13

I think it’s the heavy lifting that could be causing you pain.
We should lift heavy things but it needs to be done correctly and a weight we can manage - if you are doing it all day I can definitely see why your muscles would be sore.

EmeraldShamrock · 08/10/2021 22:14

Bring your feet together when standing still.
I think posture issues make a difference.
I was slouching a lot in work but made a conscious decision to straighten out it definitely helped.
Good shoes are a must, practise stretching at home too.

What job means you walk without any stop, for 6 hours?
Barmaid/waitresses
I usually do 20+ steps a day I've done 30+ sometimes on long shifts.
I wear Sketchers trainers which make a big difference but my feet still kill me sometimes and my legs get really stiff and achy in the evenings.
I've done it for four years and I feel like I should be really fit but I'm just really tired!
