Loud noise makes me irrationally angry. I hate when ambulances sound their sirens loudly as they’re driving past cyclists and pedestrians, people beeping horns (even though these things are necessary)

People in my building slamming the door shut, people talking very loudly on the train or bus.

Children screaming, not even crying, just screaming and shrieking.

Dragging furniture across a wooden floor, knocking loudly on the door, and so on.

The other day I was sitting on the train near to an Irish man with an extremely loud voice. I had to put loud music on my earphones to drown him out.

These noises make me so angry, I know I’m irrational though. I put on headphones when I can but do people have any other coping mechanisms?

Another thing I struggle with is concentrating on a conversation if there is any background noise

Same. People eating, dogs licking themselves. My absolute WORST is the that ‘glug glug’ sound of wine being poured into a glass. It makes me want to push the glass over Blush

RampantIvy · 08/10/2021 07:16

@Borderline998

It is something that puts me off having children. I know babies and children do cry and shout, but currently I struggle to be in the same room as a screaming baby or toddler so not sure how I would cope.
DD is 21 and has several times told me that she hates babies and toddlers and has no intention of having children because of this.

Even as a small child she was never interested in babies. She also never enjoyed playing with dolls.

Urgh yes, loud sniffling, why don’t you just blow your nose !!

It's awful. I feel so bad when I'm like Why are you eating so noisily and DH is just sat eating toast. It's not as bad if I put the TV on or eat at the same time.

I was once on a train sat next to a sniffer, so I offered them a clean tissue. The sniffer was embarrassed but grateful.

Yes, in my forties now and it's getting worse! 😂 think it developed from childhood when I had to try and block out the noise of my stepdad being abusive towards my mum so I used to use my Walkman and hold the headphones really tight to my head until they stopped. When there was no fighting, I couldn't cope with a ticking clock in my room, or the tap dripping in the bathroom or anything like that. In fact I could even hear a ticking clock two rooms away!

Now I need quiet unless it's noise by my own making! And I include when my children were younger. Now I'm less tolerant 😅 Weirdly I can tolerate the eating noise of one but not the other!🤔

Dogs licking
Slurping drinks
Tapping
Knee jiggling (silent but infuriating as my stepdad used to do it)
Lip smacking
Sucking teeth (after teeth brushing for eg again, another stepfather memory)

I have wondered if I have inattentive ADHD or maybe it's all PTSD 😌

isthismylifenow · 08/10/2021 16:33

I forgot about the erratic tea stirring. A quick stir of about 2 to 3 swirls is enough to ge the job done. If I sit next to someone in a restaurant who orders a hot drink and stirs the sugar in for what seems minutes..... Argh I can't handle it.

Sausagedogsarethebest · 08/10/2021 16:49

Oh God yes! Slurping, crunching, chewing, people who thump their keyboards, those who don't turn off key clicks on their phones, picking at skin on fingers, clattering cutlery, loud talking on mobiles....LOTS of noises annoy me.

Mymapuddlington · 08/10/2021 16:50

I’m the same, if it’s any help your own child won’t get on your nerves half as much as someone else’s lol

ufucoffee · 08/10/2021 20:12

Anyone who has the sound switched on on their phone. Especially the keypad. Why?

LoveFall · 08/10/2021 20:19

Backup beepers on trucks (lorries).
Children shrieking and high pitched screaming at day care centers behind our building.
Our caretaker towing the building's skips out of the garbage room to the street and then the huge trucks emptying them, including loud backup beepers.
Constant fire truck sirens from the firehall near us, including fancy flourishes.
The little dog in the building across from us (corgi) yapping all day. Thankfully our dog mostly ignores him.

And all of this on a university campus that has a lot of housing development on it and constant construction.

The university's motto is "A Place of Mind." It is more like a place of noise.

My goodness I sound grouchy.

MoiCnoi · 08/10/2021 20:23

I go to great lengths to avoid having breakfast at the same time as my lovely FIL. Can't do it.

More upsetting DS has started chewing with his mouth open. Argh.

SpanishGoatFlower · 08/10/2021 20:52

Self scan bleeping in the supermarket, 😱

TheAntiGardener · 08/10/2021 20:57

Yes. Haven’t been in my garden this summer as a neighbour behind us has a shitty water feature that sounds like an open drain. Veer between wanting to cry, being desperate to locate the thing which I can’t actually see (don’t know why - it won’t help obviously) and fantasising about taking a hammer to it.

I’m an extreme case. No joke.

TheAntiGardener · 08/10/2021 20:59

Misophonia is also why I like wfh - being trapped at a desk while people chew, chomp and hammer away at their keyboards is a nightmare. One former colleague yawned continually in a way that meant I could hear their saliva going - can’t really describe it, but I always thought of it as a ‘wet yawn’ - that made me want to throw up.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 08/10/2021 21:00

Any food related stuff, eating and things like swinging knives and forks while eating or looking gormless while eating loudly (my exH), nervous tics, scratching, all kinds of human things but I have never once been irritated by an animal no matter what they do.
Maybe I should go and live alone in a forest somewhere.

BlankTimes · 08/10/2021 21:02

I have it too. Look up Flare Calmer, I've found them very helpful. They're not an earplug, but somehow they take the irritating edge off all the noises that otherwise make me want to throttle whoever's making them.

AdditionalCharacter · 08/10/2021 21:10

I have this, mainly with people eating and drinking. Cant eat in a quiet room. DH drives me insane with his constant slurping of anything and he makes this weird noise at the back of his throat when he eats as well. Have a work colleague who I actively avoid when she is eating as she slurps everything, eats with her mouth open and talks while eating.

Not sure if it's also related, but names/words that are spelled incorrectly to be unique make me feel nauseous, for example, some of the Kardashian sisters names that shouldn't be spelled with a K.

Brieandcamembert · 08/10/2021 21:36

I can't deal with chewing, hearing music over someone else's head phones, hand dryers.any repetitive sounds. Low bass sounds (generator, bassy music).

Certain songs go straight through my. It's a real problem as it restricts my enjoyment of life.

MrsDThomas · 08/10/2021 21:38

Chewing and breathing.

I could easily commit murder

WinterCarlisle · 08/10/2021 21:47

I’ve had misophonia all my life. The sound of my mum (who I love so much and get on brilliantly with) eating used to to drive me to tears before I left home. My dad (ditto) is just as bad if not worse.

It’s mainly eating / drinking noises that triggers me. I work with someone who’s a total coffee addict. She constantly has a giant cup on the go. Every. Single. Time. she drinks it’s accompanied by a slurp and a gulp. It’s horrific.

Weirdly baby / little children / animal noises (apart from incessant barking which I think annoys everyone) don’t bother me. As soon as my children hit about 11 though I find myself getting more and more twitched at eating / drinking noises.

I also HATE the sound of cans being opened, it’s awful.

There’s loads of others too Confused

I have ADHD too so I do wonder if there’s a link?

WinterCarlisle · 08/10/2021 21:50

Also - I listen to a lot of talk type radio / podcasts: if someone has a “clicky” voice I have to turn off straight away - even if it’s something I really want to listen to. It’s difficult to describe, it’s not related to accent or anything. It’s clicky and wet sounding, almost as if they have ill fitting dentures or something.

LastStarfighter · 08/10/2021 21:52

I couldn’t read the full thread as just the thought was setting me on edge.

But I really recommend Flare earplugs. They sort of filter the noise rather than blocking it, and somehow make it less irritating.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 08/10/2021 21:52

For me it's the TV and people eating, or licking the fricking yoghurt pot lid. Seriously put the lid down, no one needs to be licking a pot lid and especially not at work.

WormYourHonour · 08/10/2021 21:53

Yep.

I get raged about a lot of noises. I also have tinnitus in my right ear, which I don't think help as my brain focuses on other noises to drown out the hiss.

2 of the worst noises for me are neighbours cats meowing to be let in and the dogs barking endlessly.
