To not want to go to a baby group with ill children

Just see a post on a baby group I go to encouraging children and babies to still go to group if they have cold symptoms but seem happy in themselves?

No mention of covid in the post whatsoever.. I would expect encouragement to take PCR at least as cold and covid symptoms can be very similar?

Someone in the comments saying their baby is poorly but in that case will still be attending Sad

AIBU for not wanting to go to a baby group with ill babies??? Or am I being overly sensitive to germs Hmm would really rather not get ill myself and also don't want my baby getting ill!

OMG NOOOOO! That’s dreadful YANBU!

Irresponsible. Not because of Covid. Because of Respiratory Syncitial Virus. Which causes bronchiolitis, which is a major cause of hospitalisation in babies. But in many people manifests with cold symptoms.

I think it’s odd that they are actively encouraging it and not mentioning to get a PCR test with covid specific symptoms.

But babies and toddlers constantly have colds in the autumn and winter and you would never go anywhere if you stayed at home every time they had a snotty nose. So I do think that it’s okay to take them to activities with a cold if they are well enough.

Very irresponsible.

I wouldn’t worry too much from a COVID POV but more from an RSV point of view which is already worse than normal this winter

bellsbuss · 07/10/2021 17:14

That would put me off going

JuneOsborne · 07/10/2021 17:16

Eugh, I wouldn't go either. Mind you, I went to parents evening at my son's primary school an hour ago. The amount of coughing kids was unreal.

I think it's really hard for people who've had babies under lockdown as we've all been in this heightened state of anxiety about health. But really and truly, babies and toddlers are literally continuously ill - if you couldn't take a baby with a cold anywhere you would be in perma-lockdown. I suspect the group leader may have been trying to reassure people that it was ok to bring a baby with a snotty nose. Obviously it's your choice whether you want to go or not, but unfortunately the reality of small children is that they and you are ill at least 75% of the time.

User76478 · 07/10/2021 17:17

@bellsbuss I won't be going, which is a shame as good groups are few and far between here

Hadn't even thought of RSV

I know babies are going to get ill with nursery etc but I would still like to avoid it as much as possible I just didn't know if I was being too sensitive

I wouldn't take my baby out when they're ill so would hope, especially after the last year, others would do the same but from the comments it appears not

The post was from a few days ago but only just come up and I am surprised no one has called it out in the comments Confused

Omg no. I’d avoid.

Bit odd they are specifically encouraging it, but young kids can have coughs and runny noses for weeks on end in winter so I wouldn't stop our activities unless it was a fresh, heavy cold.

Strange post for them to make though!
