Coincidence or weird?

A few weeks ago my partner had to go away for a few days so I was here in the house by myself.. On one of the evenings I listened to a particular song quietly and pottered about. The music would not be heard by anyone outside the house.

The following day I went out for a few hours and on return the neighbours were in their garden playing the exact same piece of music I’d been listening to the previous evening. As I went into my house they disappeared inside too. I’ve never known them to play music outside. Tbh, It made me feel very uncomfortable but I’ve ignored it. Aibu to feel uncomfortable or should I just assume it’s a coincidence?

I reckon it was a ghost. A 90s soft rock ghost.

Whitechocpizza · 07/10/2021 08:59

Livin on a prayer- Bon Jovi ?

Tell us the song OP.

WildfirePonie · 07/10/2021 14:01

YANBU

Do they have a key? Did they know the previous owner? Could they have had access? Do you think they could have bugged your room?

WellThatsATurnipForTheBooks · 07/10/2021 14:05

Are you sure you weren't singing it loudly whilst listening to it

Bathrooms are notorious for their acoustics and amplifying qualities Grin

If be inclined to say it was much louder than you thought and this is their pass-agg way of telling you.

HarrietsChariot · 07/10/2021 14:17

Just because you don't think they could hear, doesn't mean they didn't pick up on it subconsciously. Also whatever made you decide to play that particular song may have made them play it too. Perhaps you both watched the same TV programme last week where it was played in the scene in the cafe, and their brain churned round a little slower than yours.

Did you just play one song in the past few days? If you have listened to several songs, it's not inconceivable someone else might listen to one of them too. I watched "Buster" a couple of months ago, then the next day a neighbour was playing Phil Collins.

It would actually be more remarkable if weird coincidences never happened.

Rainbowshine · 07/10/2021 14:21

There’s loads of 90s playlists around on Amazon Music etc. And lots of anniversaries of albums from that time e.g. Britpop, grunge (Nirvana) etc. So I would say coincidence led by algorithms or a radio station jumping on the 90s retro bandwagon.

Brindisi32 · 07/10/2021 16:46

To those asking what song - i won’t name it but it was by the Cranberries.

@Magicstars yes there is a backstory in terms of harassment/vandalism in this neighbourhood. I was forced to garage my car due to repetitive vandalism and tampering nearly 10 hrs ago. The area has a fairly low crime rate. I also experienced intimidation, catcalling, stalking and other forms of harassment like rubbish thrown in the garden. Some of the people were identifiable, some weren’t. Off and on, I spoke to my partner about going to police/putting up cameras: at times he claimed I was paranoid; at other times he said he didn’t want cameras or police coming round.

I don’t know these neighbours very well and yes I’m jumpy as I really don’t want to be faced with another round of harassment. I’m suspicious because It was obvious I was here by myself: in previous times that’s when I was more likely to get the physical forms of harassment.

The music was on low, I don’t share a party wall with these neighbours so it wouldn’t have filtered through.

One hell of a drip feed
Brindisi32 · 07/10/2021 18:33

Why do you say name change fail?

SmileySandwich · 07/10/2021 18:34

Because you're using a different name to post now

Brindisi32 · 07/10/2021 18:44

Yes epic fail! Re drip feed, i didn’t want to go into lots of details about my past neighbourhood situation. But context was needed (thanks to being accused of paranoia) so I answered with more details.

You've changed your username, mid way through your thread?
LubaLuca · 07/10/2021 20:49

They might have had Absolute 90s on - they play a disproportionate amount of The Cranberries. Something more obscure would give me pause for thought, but not a song that was a big hit.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 07/10/2021 21:13

If nightmare neighbours are wanting to pass you off I doubt they'd be doing it by putting a glass to your wall, picking up a song and going to the trouble of playing it back to you some time later

That would be the strangest subtlest way to get back at you.

Actupfishy · 07/10/2021 21:16

Sorry OP - you’re update is even more confusing, are your neighbours responsible for the stalking/harassment?

Rubbish in garden are you taking fly tip level or random bits?

No these neighbours were not responsible for the bouts of stalking/harassment/vandalism. They did not live in the neighbourhood at that time.

Yes there’s been a mixture of fly tipping outside our garage and items being thrown deliberately in our enclosed garden. No these neighbours would not be responsible for that either.

Brindisi32 · 08/10/2021 14:11

Even with a glass to the wall, they would not have heard the song.

I’ve lived in this neighbourhood for over 10yrs and nothing would surprise me now. In previous years I’ve had very obvious and subtle forms of harassment. I hope I’m wrong in this instance but part of me suspects I’m in for another bout of crap.

BikeRunSki · 08/10/2021 14:16

It was the ghost of Kurt Cobain playing tricks on you OP.

Brindisi32 · 08/10/2021 14:44

Unfortunately the bills for car vandalism weren’t in my head.

@BikeRunSki @ispepsiokay if people can get away with anonymous harassment, they’ll do it…

Poptart4 · 08/10/2021 14:57

I'm sorry op but you really do sound paranoid.

If these neighbours had nothing to do with the previous incidents from years ago, why do you think they are harassing you now? Have you had a falling out with them?

Playing a particular song is not harassment.
