To be pissed off about this

My partner is terrible at life admin! Clearing out a bunch of old paperwork and I’ve just found a letter I received that he opened in late 2019 from HMRC that says they owe me 1.3k in overpaid tax 🤦‍♀️

He said he meant to tell me about it (I mean who wouldn’t!!) but forgot!!! Expect I’ve now lost that money/it’s expired but AIBU to be seething 😤

To avoid the drip feed, we do open each other’s mail and I have no issue with that in general!

Omg, yes definitely!! Shock . Who would forget to pass that letter on, is he always that lax?

Eileen101 · 06/10/2021 20:16

I take it they don't still issue cheques? (It's been a long time since I had any money returned!) If it is, could you ask them to reissue it? Do you need to provide bank details? What does the letter say about logistics for payment?

Frazzledmummy123 · 06/10/2021 20:17

Sorry, just saw first sentence of your post. I am quite bad with paperwork and admin stuff but I could never imagine being that laid back

MadeForThis · 06/10/2021 20:17

They normally post a second letter with a cheque attached to the bottom.

Regardless, it won't expire. Contact them and they will issue a new cheque.

quitefranklyabsurd · 06/10/2021 20:18

Call them to ask that they reissue it. Or if you have one log into your personal tax account and reclaim it. I’ve done it through the tax account and My husband found an expired
Cheque and they reissued it quite quickly. All
Is not lost! You can still get Your Money.

Granllanog · 06/10/2021 20:18

Why do you think you have lost the money?

Eileen101 · 06/10/2021 20:18

But yes, I'd be pissed off. It agravates me enough when my husband opens emails on the joint email, doesn't tell me, then "oh did you see xyz?" No because it's showing as a read email. If you open it, action it. Grrr.

The money must still be there for you somehow op.

Watchingyou2sleezes · 06/10/2021 20:18

You can still claim that rebate. Got 4 years from the end of the relevant tax year to claim it

Libra22 · 06/10/2021 20:19

I’ll call them tomorrow with the letter reference but am fuming at him!

He is quite lax with things like remembering to MOT his car and I usually deal with the big finance stuff like remortgaging etc!

dudsville · 06/10/2021 20:19

It's a silly situation, but the refund won't expire.

Libra22 · 06/10/2021 20:20

@Watchingyou2sleezes you’re a star thank you for your advice! Will call them tomorrow, at least it wasn’t issued in 2017!

TakeYourFinalPosition · 06/10/2021 20:21

You won’t have lost the money; you’ve got six years to claim it. You may well need to ask for the cheque to be reissued but that’s it.

Libra22 · 06/10/2021 20:34

Thank you all for your good advice, will call HMRC tomorrow and be a bit less annoyed at DP tonight 😂

You have not lost the money, it might just be a bit more of a pain to get it back, but I am surprised that HMRC have not already adjusted your tax code if PAYE, or shown it as a payment on account if you submit a self assessment.

MaybeAMoaner · 06/10/2021 20:40

Check your current tax code.
Quite often they will give tax back through giving you a better tax code (ie more tax free pay)
