I think someone has been in my house

I came down this morning and a side table had been moved about a metre and a half across the room. The phone socket, tv aerial etc is behind the table.

It’s fairly heavy and was wedged into a corner so the dog couldn’t have moved it by mistake.

I initially thought it may have been one of the kids fiddling with the WiFi box but they say they haven’t moved it.

Trying not to freak out here but thinking it could be some kind of surveillance operation due to the phone socket behind it.

There have been people outside over the last few days in unmarked vans installing “community fibre”.

Am I being totally unreasonable and paranoid?

Nobody doing surveillance for benefit fraud would be coming into your house in the night. If the van is bothering you take a photo of the Licence plate. Expect most likely child related.

VirgilStarkwell · 06/10/2021 21:08

It’s a poltergeist. ‘Tis the season, after all.

fruitbrute · 06/10/2021 21:09

Oh love, Universal Credit (the DWP) don't break into houses and run undercover surveillance by bugging sockets. They maybe check social media and bank accounts if they have reason to suspect something isn't right with a claim.

This thread is scary because if it's real it suggests that you're jumping to absolutely out there conclusions based on very little factual evidence. I hope you're ok Flowers

HalzTangz · 06/10/2021 21:09

If you were under surveillance you wouldn't know, they wouldn't leave furniture out.

Far more likely you have a sleep walker in the house, failing that you have a ghost

CounsellorTroi · 06/10/2021 21:10

Probably the kids and they are enjoying winding you up by denying it, seeing how spooked you are,

Essexmum321 · 06/10/2021 21:11

Do you rent OP or could anyone else have a key?

girlmom21 · 06/10/2021 21:12

Any professional installing surveillance would make sure they put the table back where they found it.

Any of your kids ever sleepwalked?

RevolvingPivot · 06/10/2021 21:14

Would the dog not notice if someone broke in overnight? Although I know some dogs aren't bothered by noise.

Smashingspinster · 06/10/2021 21:27

It is highly unlikely that anyone is watching you - nothing you are doing would warrant that much expenditure at a time when budgets are stretched. The simplest explanation is usually the right one - your kids moved the table and did not want to say or forgot. The van is just a van which is parked. Your stress is definitely making you paranoid. Take care of yourself.

CandyLeBonBon · 06/10/2021 21:29

I had this 3 years ago. Turns out my ex was stalking me, letting himself in and fucking with my head by messing with my stuff. Felt like I was going mad.

TheGrumpyGoat · 06/10/2021 21:30

If it’s undercover surveillance then they’re really, really shit at it…

Community Fibre did access my garden (behind a locked gate) and installed wires across some of my plants. I rang the block
Owner to complain and they had no knowledge it was happening…

I agree!
No one would break into your home unless they were breaking and entering to steal stuff but if the tv and other electronics are still there then they wouldn’t have broken in.

If you think someone came in at night would the dog not bark?

Honestly OP you sound a bit paranoid. Are you suffering with lack of sleep or depression/stress?
When I would get down I would get paranoid which meant I struggled to sleep and the less sleep I had the more paranoid I got - it was a very scary vicious cycle.

scully29 · 06/10/2021 21:45

I would have thought it was ghosts! it sounds scary!

It's definitely HMRC then
scully29 · 06/10/2021 21:50

I do think I remember this happening on Neighbours back in the day, where the kid was trying to make out the mum was crazy?

Furtherdownthespiral · 06/10/2021 21:51

Of course it's not bloody ghosts, the OP doesn't need this ridiculous shit when she is clearly stressed to fuck and already thinking of scary paranoid scenarios

Ostagazuzulum · 06/10/2021 21:51

Have you thought about calling 101 and telling police a van got abandoned in street and you don't think it's neighbours. Let them come and check it on pnc. Or pas them registration. Might put your mind at rest?

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 06/10/2021 21:56

OP how's your MH been lately? I'm suggesting this gently but you seem paranoid and anxious. This coukd be a sign of needing some support.

WildfirePonie · 06/10/2021 22:00

Can you change the locks?

Yourstupidityexhaustsme · 06/10/2021 22:04

The most rational explanation is 99.9999% the right one.

The children will have moved it and either forgotten/thought they would be in trouble.

If you're worried though definitely invest in a nanny cam to set your mind at ease.

ApolloandDaphne · 06/10/2021 22:14

I suspect something has fallen behind the table, one of the kids pulled it out to retrieve it, and completely forgot about it.

neveradullmoment99 · 06/10/2021 22:17

And you trust your kids?
I think they are not telling you the truth!

IAmTheLovechildOfYvesAndIsabel · 06/10/2021 22:18

I really agree with the pp's that have suggested it's either the kids, the dog or probably the kids and the dog! Then they just forgot.

What is bothering me is that you think someone may have entered your home to do surveillance. I am sure it isn't that. Really, really sure.

But I appreciate that you think it's a possibility and that must be very scary for you.
You said your ex has MH issues and that must be very stressful. Even without worrying or having to deal with your ex you also have the kids and the dog to look after, a boisterous toddler and you said your neighbour isn't very friendly.
It sounds like you have a lot going on at the moment.
Please don't think I am being funny but maybe a chat with your doctor could help.
You have to look after yourself first before you can look after anyone else. Xx
