To think a decent washer/dryer must exist?

Possibly the most boring thread on here but here we go...

I don't have room for both a washer and a dryer in my flat but do need both.

My mother and sister-in-law swear a washer/dryer won't work properly and I've not had one before but...surely they must!?

Can anyone recommend one that works and doesn't cost the earth?

Thank you!

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for washer dryer recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best washer dryer page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful.

Ours is bloody brilliant. We used to have a separate drier and it was an old hotpoint one and it took hours! We have a new Hoover washer- drier and it’s fantastic! So good at drying and such a good range of cycles.

PurpleNebula84 · 06/10/2021 22:04

The best one I had was a Hisense 10kg washer dryer - the only thing was that it kept breaking down making it not so good - within a few months I ended up with a refund as it couldn't be repaired - it was a great washer and a great dryer when it worked, but I didn't want to chance the same problem again - could only dry 7kg though. I've just bought my first two separates as I'm moving soon - I've gone for a heat pump tumble dryer so doesn't need to be vented and it going to live in my living room until I get to my new place - that could be an option if you've got somewhere out of the way to put it xx

CasperGutman · 06/10/2021 22:21

We used to love our washer dryer when we both worked full time before we had kids. We didn't care that it took ages. We liked that we could put a wash on and not worry about it until it was dry. Separates are better now we have children though - we need to be able to wash a full load and then put another on without waiting for things to dry.

I just got an AEG L7WE7631BI and seems to be okay so far. It doesn't dry a full load of washing but I only really wanted it for towels, bedding and undies etc so just unload the other clothes to hang on a maiden and then do the dryer cycle. Would have preferred a separate dryer but didn't have any room!

CointreauVersial · 06/10/2021 22:30

I have a Zanussi one - old, but excellent. Wouldn't be without it.

As others have said, it won't dry a whole wash load at once (and obviously not simultaneously) but it is perfect if you tend to use a dryer for things like sheets and towels, and hang the rest up to air....or if you need some items dried in a hurry. It probably wouldn't work if you had a big family and want to tumble dry everything you wash.

In terms of its drying ability, it's as good as a regular tumble dryer.

We have the Hotpoint RD1176JDUKN_WH from ao.com for around £500. We have absolutely no space for stacked machines (its under our kitchen counter) and we had a baby in June so desperately needed a dryer. It's much better than i imagined and although the cycles are long, it has an extra dry setting that means everything comes out properly dry. I cant believe i waited so long to get one.

GuidingSpirit · 06/10/2021 22:32

I should add we also have a Lakeland dry:soon heated airer for anything that cant go in the dryer for a gentlier dry without it hanging around on airers for days on end.

daisyducky · 06/10/2021 22:39

I have a Samsung eco bubble. I get on well with it but I don't tend to tumble from wet often. I usually line dry then a quick tumble to finish it off to try and conserve energy

Chrita · 06/10/2021 22:41

I was dubious but didn't have space for separates so bought the John Lewis one as was the most affordable Which Best Buy - it's now 2 years old, and I love it! A standalone dryer would no doubt be quicker and have a larger capacity, but, it works well in the space we have and wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

This was ours but like I said no longer available:

@Shadowboy which hoover washer dryer do you have if you don’t mind me asking? Considering a hoover from Argos.

This one… I think it’s just called the wash-dry 300

We have a Candy washer dryer. The only thing it struggles with is towels for some reason - I normally need to wash, spin and drain it twice, then dry, which can be a bit of a pain but otherwise I have no issues.

I can wash a load of work clothes and have them washed and dried within two hours.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 07/10/2021 07:42

Mine is fine, not great, but it works. Used to be great in the beginning, but with time clothes seem to take longer to dry now. I wouldn't be without it though. I use it 2/3 times a week. The only downsides are that when doing bedding I can only wash and dry the duvet cover in one go so it takes at least two goes to get a full set clean and that the filter gets mucky and full of fluff very quickly so it needs cleaning regularly otherwise the machine gets blocked and won't empty properly after a wash.

A good washer dryer is as rare as rocking horse shit

Missc2001 · 07/10/2021 12:43

@Shadowboy thank you!

loopylindi · 07/10/2021 12:53

We had a Carlton washer/dryer for about 20yrs. It was secondhand too. It didn't get a whole lot of use frequently as we are just 2 adults but it was so useful in the winter when, because I was working washing was done at the weekend regardless of weather.

Justforphoto · 07/10/2021 12:54

Absolutely love mine, ok it can't dry as much as it can wash however I always have to sort out before drying as so much stuff won't tumble dry. It's a sensor dryer and the stuff comes out ready to hang in the wardrobe, very few items need ironing if I get them straight out. Yes it takes a long time so if I'm doing a load like bedding or towels which can go straight through it takes about 5 hours but that isn't an issue for me. I have a machine that is much bigger than I need, there's only 3 of us but I have a 10kgwash 7kg Dry so it works for us.

That's my machine

loopylindi · 07/10/2021 12:56

our Carlton was in fact a Zanussi under another name

motherofawhirlwind · 07/10/2021 12:58

Samsung Ecobubble here and love it. Also a Hotpoint one that's good as a washer dryer but the concrete weights get lose easily and so it's a noisy spinner.

Iheartmysmart · 07/10/2021 13:25

I’ve got a John Lewis washer/dryer JLWD1614 which works fine. Must admit I tend to put my laundry on an airer overnight then finish off in the dryer in the morning but it will wash and dry a couple of bath/hand towels plus bath mat without any drama when needed.

NovRainbow5 · 07/10/2021 13:30

We’ve got a Samsung one and it’s brilliant. We were previously using a dry buddy to dry all our clothes in the winter/when it was raining. It was a nightmare and made the house so humid. The washer dryer we’ve got now if brilliant. It doesn’t dry the clothes as quick as a tumble dryer in my opinion but the clothes are always dry when it’s finished and if not we pop it back on for another half an hour.

Gumbo · 07/10/2021 15:10

John Lewis one here - like the other posters who've said their JL is good, mine is excellent. The load it dries is fine; I can't give you the model as it's 10 years old now (and still going strong)

bookworm100 · 25/10/2021 22:42

I just wanted to come back on here and say thank you to @Qwertypi ! I bought the Beko one you recommended and it has been totally great! Bone dry clean clothes. For anyone else checking out this thread wondering if such a thing as a good washer/dryer exists, it does,
It's this one! X
