my partner and I are having to clear out his parents family home due to MIL dying 8 months ago and my FIL going into a home. There is a lot of backstories so it is very painful for my partner so I am obviously doing what I can to make it easier.
I don't know if I am being unfair or not but I am fed up with people messing me about re collecting items. we are not asking a fortune we just want it going so we can pay nursing home fees.
The other day I packed up a box of decorative thimbles. it is a huge box and the amount of thimbles should be well in the hundreds. if I had time I could sell them individually sets of which there are loads on an internet auction site but we have 5 business' to run so I just cant be bothered or have time. I am sick of people messaging me saying they want them suggesting a price which I agree to then after saying they will have them they never get back to me when they want to pick up so we can arrange for one of us to be at the property. the other is can we post! even by courier they would not like the price and like I say I don't have time.
so am I being unfair and should just accept it as part of selling or am I right and people are rude and time wasters?

If you've got loads then a car boot sale is a good way to shift things in a day.

Bargoed · 06/10/2021 10:24

Car boot!

Thelnebriati · 06/10/2021 10:27

Are auctions still running atm? You only have to drop the stuff off and collect it if unsold, and I've never had to collect a lot like that. People who have the time to car boot them or sell them on Ebay will buy them.

labazslovesliving · 06/10/2021 10:49

thank you eBay would normally be my first stop but there are literally 100s of the thimbles; that is only the start. MIL was a hoarder and the place is ram-packed with collections of things so will be a massive undertaking and time is not on my side due to nursing home fees which at the moment are being paid by social services but will have to be repaid.
There is not a local auction now unfortunately but we usually do a car boot most Sundays but they are starting to finish soon like I said so so much stuff it is a nightmare.
some people are nice though one man came for a fridge and told us he was just moving into his first place. he ended up buying the washing machine, plus loads of kitchen stuff toaster kettle baking equipment cutlery etc. all old but clean so it was nice that he was interested and certainly helped us.

People are so unbelievably rude. I give lots of stuff away for free on Gumtree and you get this type of thing all the time even when it's free. Once my husband actually left the park with DD early because someone was meant to be collecting something and they didn't show. I was furious.

FictionalCharacter · 06/10/2021 11:08

This happens all the time when you offer things cheap or free to collect. Best to set a strict deadline for collection and stick to it. If they don’t collect, it goes to someone else, because the person to failed to turn up once will do it again. Some of them seem to do it for fun.

maofteens · 06/10/2021 11:47

I have given up trying to give anything away. Luckily I did have a local auction firm when I last and have done quite well. A house clearance firm might do it but you won't get any money. Local charity shops have also done quite well out of me!

pelosi · 06/10/2021 12:27

Do you have to get rid of the thimbles now?

Maybe put them in an attic and revisit selling them once DH or you have more time?

PlanDeRaccordement · 06/10/2021 12:31

There lots of time wasters out there. I think finding a local estate auction house is a good idea for collectibles. They’ll research value, auction them off and take % cut.

labazslovesliving · 06/10/2021 13:43

we run many businesses from home which is a tiny house so are only keeping what we really want such as photos rather than the collections which are not our taste. off the top of my head is the following collections;
thimbles
lorries
bells whisky bottle
baby cham
royal family mugs
other mugs
keyrings
magnets
pigs
daniel o Donnell stuff
dolls
and lots more plus throw in 5 wall units, 3 piece suite, beds, bedroom furniture etc and you can see why I am tearing my hair out

Take what you want to keep and get a house clearance company to come in and take it all away. Some of them will even pay you to take it if it is valuable stuff.
