Cat lovers would you buy this at a craft fair?

I am doing my first craft fair in December I make dog and cat collars. I also plan on doing some low cost items aswell like treats and toys and blankets ect.

This is a cat mat it's thicker than a blanket and can save a sofa or bed getting too hairy?

Is this something that would interest cat owners? What price would you pay for something like this I was thinking £5? I don't want to make a few up if they are useless.

Im not looking to make a huge profit just cover costs and maybe some extra. It's just a hobby for me and not needed to pay the bills.

Ps the lighting is crap this evening its a blush pink.

No because any self respecting cat will not sleep on a blanket that is meant to be for them. My cat would purposely sit on the other sofa and ignore it.

Siameasy · 04/10/2021 20:36

In my experience cats prefer teddy bear fleece. They seem to think it’s their mum. The blanket in itself is lovely, maybe make ones for babies?

TheSpottedZebra · 04/10/2021 20:38

Aswell as cat nip mice, I'd totally love stuff like carrot, banana, doughnut-ie non cat food shapes in little toy form. But i am trying to pick things that should be relatively easy to make!

SparklyLeprechaun · 04/10/2021 20:39

It's pretty, but my cat prefers cardboard boxes. I wouldn't buy it.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/10/2021 20:39

You'd need an anti slip underlay for a windowsill or back of the sofa - or is it just my two furry wee shites that would slide off the back when they stretched out or use them as a skid pan? They would like it as long as they think they're actually sneaking onto a particularly small jumper of mine.

Not keen on collars as mine have a great ability to get themselves into shit even without leaving the house, never mind strangling themselves on shrubs.

Bombproof wands - fine. But they'd need to be stronger than anything in the shops for over a tenner, including the elastic/string.

Catnip mice and bugs - fine, but again, they'd need to be knitted on an incredibly high tension to stop one of them disembowelling it and then needing to be operated upon to remove the fragments from his bowel.

You are good at knitting, going by how even you've got the tension - and the colours are different to the usual cat related paraphernalia. But I'd almost expect the blanket to be nearer a tenner.

Shmithecat2 · 04/10/2021 20:40

It's gorgeous, but my lot would ruin it in minutes with their claws.

thaegumathteth · 04/10/2021 20:44

My cats would get their claws stuck in it and throw it constantly around. They'd also cover it in fur and it looks like it'd be hard to get it off.

Thank you all for such lovely comments.

It's all crochet I can't knit at all Blush the cat nip mice will be made on my sewing machine. I am thinking of making these too but in a soft chenille type yarn.

Are cat collars not a great idea? Should I stick to just dog collars?

Oooh, make it tough as old boots and twice the size and I'll lose the cat occasionally in it.
Shehasadiamondinthesky · 04/10/2021 20:48

Not really my cats prefer blankets and soft fleeces, and my bed.
I have to cover everything with big blankets because she is mostly white and sheds everywhere.

Wester · 04/10/2021 20:48

I would buy it, especially if it fits nicely into a cat carrier.

I do however LOVE cute little nice that are filled with catnip. And so do my cats, they go wild for real wool toys stuffed with catnip, so I would buy some, and buy some for my friends with pet cats too!

Don't do cat collars, if they are not proper quick release ones the cat can get it caught somewhere and die a slow death.
LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 04/10/2021 20:49

The ring would be a thin but strong steel hoop and I would do a tight tension and a lower hook size in the crochet so it wouldn't be "holey"

I wouldn't buy anything for my cats to sleep on because they just sleep wherever they feel like. I've had cats off and on most of my life and they have never slept where they are meant to.

But I would buy the catnip mice. You'll have much more success with those.

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/10/2021 20:52

I think cats would like it, clawing it is all the part of the fun of catting.

No to collars, they can strangle themselves.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 04/10/2021 20:52

Your blanket looks lovely. I have a dog and would buy a bigger one for my large hound - especially if you could personalise it by sewing a name on? I think personalised pet products are popular with obsessed owners. It's getting on towards Xmas - how about making some Christmassy type things? Festive-shaped gifts, stockings, festive collar bandanas, knitted Christmas collars with jingle bells? My DPs had a Weinmaraner years back, I bought her a collar with sleigh bells on as a joke gift one Xmas but the dog adored it and would sit, staring at it until you put it on her. She loved jingling on her walks through December - think it took DF a couple of years to get used to it though Smile

I like the catnip toy fish displayed in the fish tank! I'd buy one for friend's with cats. Price-wise, don't sell yourself short. I enjoy craft fairs and would expect to pay more for handmade items.

Knitwit101 · 04/10/2021 20:53

And no to homemade collars. The risk of getting caught on a tree branch while climbing is too high.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 04/10/2021 20:53

Its a lovely blanket. Id buy a bigger one for myself. Its too nice for my cats! They'd ruin it

Marzipanfruit · 04/10/2021 20:58

I love it and know my big cat would too. My wee cat prefers clean washing! Think £5 is a total bargain and love the idea a previous poster had of a windowsill version.

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 04/10/2021 21:01

Windowsill version is definitely going on the list with a rubber matting thing under to stop it slipping they will be super quick to make too Grin

This ^ Grin

Dogs, on the other hand might.

I think it would be a nightmare getting fur out of it and my cat would get his claws into it and pull the threads or, worse, hurt himself if his claw got stuck.

It's very pretty though. If you want simple knitting projects to sell, cushion covers, larger throws, snoods, scarfs/wraps, hats, wrist warmers etc would be better options.

ShinyMe · 04/10/2021 21:16

It's nice, but no. Partly because my cat gets his claws stuck in anything knitted or crocheted really easily, and partly because I can crochet and could make that myself. But it's nice and I'm sure some people would buy it.

toocold54 · 04/10/2021 21:22

Does it have to be for cats?
I think it is lovely but maybe not something I’d think about buying for my cat.
So you may sell more if you don’t call them cat blankets.

WormYourHonour · 04/10/2021 21:23

Looks pretty, I'd buy it just to have it, but it's the wrong material for a cat to use.
