Words that other adults use that irritate you?

Some examples that seem to irritate me (yes I know it’s totally irrational!).

First is someone calling the tumble dryer ‘the tumblee’ (written phonetically to explain how they pronounce it). Second is ‘homee’ rather than home. I know there is no reason for these to give me the rage but they do.

AIBU to feel irrationally annoyed? What words that other adults use give you the rage?

On here I hate it when people respond to other posters with "on my love.." or " oh my darling..." when they don't know them from Adam.

Gross.

When people use the term: ‘at the minute..’

Makes me want to punch them.

So agree - it is a horrible expression! Whatever happened to 'at the moment'??

My friend starts every sentence with
"Like I say". 😡

FancyLampshade · 08/10/2021 16:33

@wantanotherdog

Yeah, ikr – it depends where you live. Grin

Less of it in the UK, which is one thing it has going for it at least.

CatJumperTwat · 08/10/2021 16:34

Poorly and tummy. Are you three?

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 08/10/2021 16:55

@MydogWillow

Guys referring to their girlfriends as The Missus.

Actually, anyone referring to their significant other as The Missus.

Or The Wife. Why not "my wife" or even better, "Sally my wife".

No but I might be talking to or about someone who is Grin

Irony.

Juleha · 09/10/2021 09:27

Awesome. It rarely is.
Cool. Ditto.
Utilised when used is better.
Get, instead of have.

@Onairjunkie

I’ll make no friends for this but I think the following make people sound common and just a bit thick 😬:

Nan, cuppa, brew, l’il, hun, sweets (as a term of address), poorly, tea (for dinner), doggy, my little Princess, prinny, little man, mummy’s little , bubba, bub, holibobs, girly, fab, journey, lickle, hubby, hubster, famalam, “love my little family”, doggo, kiddies, ‘super’ excited (about something mundane such as a MLM product ‘launch’), haul, colab., “this is everything”, boobing, queen/kween, my king (below photo of fat, sweating, sunburnt man in marble foyer of Dubai hotel), ‘little mate’ (referring to child)….

I could go on. And on.

'Queen' used to be an old Liverpool dialect one. 'Prinny' the same (princess) but yes it's hardly classy, I agree.
Radish12 · 09/10/2021 10:24

I can't bear it when people say they have a 'streaming' cold - it gives such a grim and vivid mental image 🤢

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 09/10/2021 11:14

Just seen a new one on here. Someone saying they don't think their child should watch "tele" at nursery. It's TV or television.

We say tv but I think a lot of people say "telly". Surely you've heard that before?

And as you have seen, the OP of that thread has recently moved to the UK from another anglophone country.

Admittedly I've never "spelled" it as tele, but I only ever say telly! I've never called it the television and rarely TV!
Glassofshloer · 09/10/2021 11:57

‘Ahaha’ - no idea why because ‘haha’ isn’t so annoying

People describing their 2yr+ kids ages in months. Even worse when they describe them as a ‘baby’ as well. ‘My 28 month baby’ 😑

Fake Glaswegian (?) spelling used online - ‘I cannae’

When arguing starting every phrase with ‘I’m sorry, but…’

Snowflake used as an insult

‘Support’ - so so so massively over used especially on here. Bonus annoying points for ‘support system’. Makes me think of scaffolding.

CounsellorTroi · 09/10/2021 12:04

Richard Osman has started to annoy me by saying “Welcome along” to the House of Games.

What? Tele / telly is very much in standard usage. Remember telly addicts?

Tele is a real word! It’s the non standard spelling for telly and what I have always called the TV.

Have you never heard of Teletubbies?!

SunShinesBrightly · 09/10/2021 16:59

‘Ahaha’ - no idea why because ‘haha’ isn’t so annoying
I always read Ahaha as ‘Ahaha, you idiot’ - A sneering laugh.
Haha is ‘Haha! You’re really funny!’
