Words that other adults use that irritate you?

Mangosmoothiesprinkles · 04/10/2021 19:54

Some examples that seem to irritate me (yes I know it’s totally irrational!).

First is someone calling the tumble dryer ‘the tumblee’ (written phonetically to explain how they pronounce it). Second is ‘homee’ rather than home. I know there is no reason for these to give me the rage but they do.

AIBU to feel irrationally annoyed? What words that other adults use give you the rage?

I hate the phrase "grab a bite"

Giggorata · 05/10/2021 10:14

I've skimmed through this thread and seen so many words and sayings that I loathe. Particulate hatred reserved for ”boomer”.

Forgive any repetition, but the use of “this bad boy” or “these bad boys” makes me practically homicidal, it is so unspeakably awful.

Giggorata · 05/10/2021 10:16

Particulate? Sometimes the autocorrect is so weird… particular.

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 05/10/2021 10:16

@Dacquoise

Ciabatta pronounced G-a-batter. An Italian once told me it's shaped like a shoe and should be pronounced shoe-barter, sounds much nicer to my ears.
Hmm I think they might have been winding you up. A latte is a latte, not a lartay and in the same way ciabatta is definitely -batta, not -barta.
lockdownmadnessdotcom · 05/10/2021 10:17

I've just thought of another one: "jump on a call". Why jump? Why not just call, ring, or phone someone?

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 05/10/2021 10:18

@Areyouhappy

With Christmas approaching, I loathe gift being used as a verb: "to gift", "I was gifted" etc. Also much prefer present instead of the word gift as a noun.
Me too. DH would introduce capital punishment for this (along with not signalling at roundabouts). A bit extreme but I get his point Grin
carebearbaby · 05/10/2021 10:20

Its mostly mumsnet/Facebook phrases rather than in real life but here are a few:

Adding no? to the end of a sentence
Mumma/momma
Gifted
'Let's call him/her'
Incredibly - really over used on here

AdaColeman · 05/10/2021 10:24

“Me thinks” you just know that they really don’t!

Yummy
Nom nom
Hubby
Cuppa
Gonna
Can I get
Could of/should of

jpbee · 05/10/2021 10:25

Leckie (instead of electricity)
Bag of crisp (instead of crisps)
Butties (instead of sandwiches)
Toffees (instead of sweets - acceptable if the sweet in question is actually Toffee)
Spearmint (instead of chewing gum)
Belly (instead of stomach)
Oh and when people refer to kids teeth as 'Peggies' - weird!

Spanglemum · 05/10/2021 10:27

What is wrong with saying Nan/Nanny/Nana?
I know a lot of people who call their mum 'Ma'. It's a London thing I think.

HereForThis · 05/10/2021 10:33

I agree and disagree a bit but it doesn't matter. I get what you're saying.

Just to be clear that my hate for these words is separate from the other issue I have re: female anatomy. I just don't like those words, regardless of how they're used or which part they're used to refer to.

Cripesalive · 05/10/2021 10:39

They were definitely winding you up, or they weren’t actually Italian. It’s Chia-batta. Not barter and most definitely not shoe! Ci in Italian is pronounced ‘Chee’

Cripesalive · 05/10/2021 10:39

Above was to Dacquoise

DappyApple · 05/10/2021 10:45

I hate when people use the plural of things like food and drink when it’s not really plural. You see it on here all the time.
Cheeses, breads, cold meats chutneys, wines etc. No need for the random “s”

“Cheeky” anything. Its not cheeky! if you want a drink have a drink.

Gift/gifted

Brought/bring instead of took or take. Ie I brought my kids to the park. I’m going to bring my dad to the doctors.
I think this is an American thing but it just doesn’t sound right.

ConstanceGracy · 05/10/2021 10:48

Mostly hubby, holibobs, chillax , lush and when people say “can you borrow me this?” No! But I can “lend” it to you …

ConstanceGracy · 05/10/2021 10:49

Oh and someone I know always calls her kids her “munchkins” one of them is 16 ffs!

degsydoodoos · 05/10/2021 10:51

I am a very easily irritated person so there are probably thousands of words that annoy me - but some of the ones that have wound me up very recently are:
"Chicken boobs" instead of chicken breasts, in a recipe . This makes me feel physically sick!
"Maccy D's "
"Trackie B's / Trackie Bums" instead of tracksuit bottoms
"Smash it "- every other back to school post I read on Facebook was encouraging their kids to go smash year 2 / sixth form / whatever
"XXXX sleeps until......" some Facebook friends have already started with the 82 sleeps till Christmas (Crimbo! / Xmas!) nonsense
"Lil man / lil lady" referring to baby or toddler
"As if" when used to mean "I can't believe"
"Half term" when used instead of Easter or Christmas holidays
"packed lunch" instead of lunchbox
There are definitely more, but these are just ones that have annoyed me over the past few days!

DappyApple · 05/10/2021 10:52

@Spanglemum

What is wrong with saying Nan/Nanny/Nana? I know a lot of people who call their mum 'Ma'. It's a London thing I think.
I don’t get it either! Nothing wrong with it, perfectly normal in my family. Granny or grandma sounds ancient or old to me and not a term I’ll be adopting when I become a grandparent
degsydoodoos · 05/10/2021 10:54

Oh, I've immediately thought of one more already.
"When" - used to start off a Facebook status. Something along the lines of "when your hubby brings you breakfast in bed" or "when your daughter is finally taller than you". It's meaningless! I think it is a abbreviation of "that feeling when.... " but even that is ridiculously annoying!!

TrackyBottomsTuckedinSocks · 05/10/2021 10:56

#FirstWorldProblems after a stealth brag Hmm

HereForThis · 05/10/2021 11:01

Chicken boobs" instead of chicken breasts, in a recipe . This makes me feel physically sick!

I've only seen one person say that, she's on YouTube. I wonder if it's the same person Grin or are there more people who do? It does sound terrible and I hate boobs used for women too.

Same with Tits, etc.

Smash it "- every other back to school post I read on Facebook was encouraging their kids to go smash year 2 / sixth form / whatever

Yes. Same with "kill it".

Also hate 'wicked' and 'sick' when saying something is great/cool, etc.

TheBillboardsAreLeering · 05/10/2021 11:02

@Crabbyboot

Gives me the rage
This. Saying "gives me the rage" is more irritating than any of the other examples I've read on this thread so far!
notthatcommon · 05/10/2021 11:02

@PinkPomeranian

Girlies - especially when referring to adults.

Yep, this one makes me want to
Punch them.

LakieLady · 05/10/2021 11:10

@HomeSliceKnowsBest

This one Hun Adding an s on the end of supermarket names ie. Aldis (I only see that here and it makes me seethe Grin). Gifting
Funny how you never hear anyone saying "Waitroses"!
pansypotter123 · 05/10/2021 11:13

I had an acquaintance who'd phone up to arrange "swapsies" on a rota we were both on. Made me shudder every single time! 🤣🙄
