Hi
Does anyone know the going rate of pay for basic legal assistant/ secretary? The job I am looking at is in Bath . Would around £10.30 sound right ?

A legal secretary around here wouldn't be on a hourly rate but an annual salary of c£25k. Most law firms wouldn't be advertising an hourly rate but a pro rata of an annual salary if it were part time.

DixonD · 04/10/2021 18:06

I’m on around £25k pro rata (I’m a senior legal assistant).

Underbox · 04/10/2021 18:09

Sounds too low to me. What's the salary on offer? Hourly rates aren't normally quoted for this type of role.

Asdf12345 · 04/10/2021 18:15

Last I was involved with was regarded as the best in the area, worked as an independent contractor and was paid 10% of fees recovered after vat. On the turnover she dealt with she would have been on 50-100k so if working for someone else, being average, and allowing for employers overheads and need to make a profit 25-30k seems about right.

HermioneAndRoger · 04/10/2021 18:18

Seems low, and as PP have said the role would normally be salaried.

optimistic40 · 04/10/2021 18:36

Sounds slightly low, but I am not sure as mine isn't hourly. Not exactly a legal sec either, but close enough. South East, full time is around £28k

Readysteadife · 05/10/2021 18:24

It’s around £14400 for 4 days per week . I am new to this type of work and am learning on the job . For the past 9 months I have been opening files , scanning , preparing cheques , uploading documents on the system and keeping the files in order .
I am now starting to be trained in new things

It is conveyancing? Because the salary in that area is generally low.

gobbynorthernbird · 05/10/2021 19:14

That sounds like more of an admin assistant role, or it certainly would be in my firm.

Readysteadife · 05/10/2021 19:19

Yes @gobbynorthernbird , but they are training me up on the secretarial side . They have said I don’t need to touch type.I am just wondering what sort of salary I should be aiming for

@LolaButt it is conveyancing

I still feel I I am getting quite low pay

Is that pre tax?

It’s over minimum wage for what sounds like a generic admin role at the moment.

I know legal secs locally on anything from 18-22k pa for full time (5 days a week)

50-100k for a legal secretary? wow. That's more than a lot of solicitors and barristers earn.
Newmumatlast · 05/10/2021 21:22
@LolaButt it is conveyancing
conveyancing and actually admin but being trained up then I would expect about 18k to be honest.

Newmumatlast · 05/10/2021 21:23

£18,000 pro rata to 4 days does work out around £14,400 based on a 40 hour week.

LolaButt · 05/10/2021 21:28

Going rate for a conveyancing assistant.

Asdf12345 · 06/10/2021 10:45

@Newmumatlast

She was effectively running her own business dealing with all the typing, printing, scheduling, invoicing and chasing payments for a number of people who then did not have to budget for pension, employers national insurance, sickness, office space, maternity etc so could attract a good deal of work whilst still being cheaper than taking on an employee for the people using her.

It wouldn’t work if you needed set hours (she could sort things out whenever and wherever needed late evenings, weekends, even when on holiday), but it seemed to work well for her.

Justcallmebebes · 06/10/2021 11:10

I'm East Mids and legal secretarial pay starts at around £19,000.00 pa here with no previous experience.

duckiemonster · 06/10/2021 11:32

Admin assistant would be c £17-18k around here, junior legal secs I'd expect to start of c£21k ish. Experienced legal secs £25k+ depending on the size of the firm / type of work

PunishmentSnart · 06/10/2021 11:36

That would be an admin assistant in places where I've worked too (NW).

So, are you currently in a job being paid that wage or have seen an advert for a job?

Also, it depends on if they are/will be paying for your training course fees.

Readysteadife · 07/10/2021 20:57

I am in the job now . They are going to train me up

Readysteadife · 07/10/2021 20:58

I used to work in Reception in the firm. I think I should be earning more than I did on reception as I am doing lots more .
