Sexist thermal underwear

AIBU to think that it's fricking ridiculous that it's difficult (impossible?) to buy really properly thick, warm, thermal underwear for women? There's plenty of choice for industrial strength thermal vests for men, but women's stuff is almost always that "pointelle" stuff, usually with lacy edges.

Examples from M&S:

Hardcore cosy men's stuff:

Stupid flimsy womens' version:

Is it because we are keeping warm over a hot stove?

I've previously bought men's vests, but they aren't small enough (unless I buy the 14 year old boys' size, and then they're a bit too small on the bust).

It's the same with socks: lovely thick warm long-lasting men's socks, and risibly weak women's versions. However, the men's socks for me fine, so I just buy them.

That is a fantastic band name.

whatnumber · 04/10/2021 17:02

This is an interesting thread as I have the heat plus or whatever they are called from m and s and I live in them through winter. They don't have Lacey bits on them. But will look at the other suggestions on here.

whatnumber · 04/10/2021 17:02

I'm after some extra warm leggings if anyone has any suggestions Grin

@TheFoundations

By the boys ones and cut holes out for your boobs. Then wear an extra bra to keep you boobs warm.

Trust me: You're gonna look GREAT.

Grin Or look like a maniac!

Seconding Icebreaker - wash and wear well and so warm.

2bazookas · 04/10/2021 17:11

You're looking in the wrong place ; there is loads of seriously warm thermal underwear for women in mountain sport and ski shops, and online ditto. Available in different thermal ratings for different seasons.

@thelegohooverer At the risk of looking like I am sponsored by Uniqlo, they also do kids sizes - up to 160cm height - and their mens ones start at size xxs, so a much better bet than M&S again.

GreatestHits · 04/10/2021 17:15

I live in uniqlo heat tech between October - March. I rate the long sleeve tops, leggings and socks.

BikeRunSki · 04/10/2021 17:18

Merino base layers from Howies, Icebreaker, Ibex, Smartwool etc come in dull colours for men and women.

FudgeFlake · 04/10/2021 17:19

Outdoor countryside working person here... Go Outdoors own brand kit has done very well. Having said, I decided I needed to finally replace a couple of the long sleeve vests as I'd worn them to death over about four winters, and they'd changed the design and they weren't nearly so comfy. I did find reasonably nice replacements in the sale at Trespass.

French66 · 04/10/2021 17:21

They do this with children's thermals too. I always buy my daughter boys thermals because the girls versions have holes. I tend to buy them in dunnes though, so could be specific to that shop.

FancyLampshade · 04/10/2021 17:24

Yes it’s irritating and stupid. Ditto women’s versions of things (bikes, cups, pens, yada yada) always coming in pink and purple. It’s fucking moronic.

northbacchus · 04/10/2021 17:27

You want the thick brush cotton inner ones from M&S if you're buying them. Easier to find in store than online though!

MrsFin · 04/10/2021 17:27

M&S does lots of thermal underwear for women that isn't lacey and is very warm and comfy to boot.

SW1amp · 04/10/2021 17:29

Try Uniqlo

Cuddlyrottweiler · 04/10/2021 17:29

Think we bought ours from go outdoors. They're identical, we often mix them up and end up trying to put the wrong size thing on.

Helenluvsrob · 04/10/2021 17:30

Uniqlo heatec

BiddyPop · 04/10/2021 17:39

I have some of those pointelle type ones from M&S from years back, but also some pretty decent ones that are slightly dainty but definitely warm. And it looks like the heatgen ones on their site this season are similar.

I've also got merino wool thermals which are far superior - Mountain Warehouse, Uniqlo, and some sports brands. (If only DH would not keep washing them in normal cycles and shrinking them...and any decent proper wool jumpers I get....so I've given up on buying more until I can control the washing better).

I'm still looking for decent socks though....

TokyoTen · 04/10/2021 17:50

Just buy ski base layers. It doesn't have lace and its warm.

PollyannaWhittier · 04/10/2021 17:51

You're looking at the wrong M&S thermals, the Heatgen plus ones are great - thick and fleecy and super warm. www.marksandspencer.com/MSFindItemsByKeyword?searchTerm=heatgen%20plus&filter=Categories=SC_Level_1_1

Cactu · 04/10/2021 17:52

Uniqlo heat tech is amazing. I don’t get sweaty in them. You wouldn’t need the ultra warm for everyday use. That is made out of very thick sort of fleecy fabric.

NapoleonOzmolysis · 04/10/2021 17:55

You need somewhere that doesn't just "pink it and shrink it"
