Rude and offensive, I would say. Our GP receptionists are very helpful!

What is the name of this utopian surgery?

No its not accurate, actually.
It's a sweeping generalisation and insulting though.

sst1234 · 03/10/2021 19:08

Yes a lot of GP receptionists are rude jobsworths that see themselves as gatekeepers of medical services and will go out of their way to make your life difficult. So many can’t be wrong if that’s their experience.

WeAreGerbil · 03/10/2021 19:13

Receptionists are only carrying out the wishes of the doctor and practice manager. They spend all day dealing with distressed people and have no control whatsoever about the availability of appointments. My teenage DD is one, she is as nice as she possibly can be, but all the criticism of GP receptionists gets her down, especially as people leave for jobs where people are nicer to them and then they are under-staffed. I actually think the NHS could do much much more to be responsive to patients, but very little of that is in the control of the receptionists.

Not sure what you are expecting as an answer to this?

I'm sure there are good and bad people in this role, same as in most roles.

Kk789 · 03/10/2021 20:23

I can't be bothered to watch the thing. It's probably really insulting.
I was a GP receptionist and, at the GPs wishes, I had to try to weed out the people asking for "emergency appointments" for things that definitely weren't an emergency, obvious even to my unqualified self, people insisting they needed to see a GP, but actually should be booked in with a nurse, and those who should have been going straight to A&E or a chemist.

Yet everyone calls GP receptionists horrible names because "they're not a doctor", "they don't have a medical degree", "they shouldn't be asking me personal questions". They also don't decide when appointments open, that's down to the practice manager making the rules, not them gatekeeping the appointments.

It's pathetic.

I know some GP receptionists can be jobsworths, same in ANY job, but the amount of stick they get is ridiculous.

Grow up and tell the receptionists your requirements so they can get you seen by the right person and stop blaming them for the practice deciding not to open appointments.

I have recently been diagnosed with a life changing (but not life-threatening, for clarity) condition.
Speaking to the GP receptionist is a little like asking them to donate a kidney to you, when all you want is to actually speak to a doctor. I had to argue back and forth for a week to get an appointment.
I have no idea why they are so obstructive when they are supposed to be helping patients.
My GP surgery was pretty bad before the pandemic. Now, it's terrible.

HarrietSchulenberg · 03/10/2021 21:09

Let's not forget that the receptionist is carrying out the GP's wishes and only has a limited number of appointments to give out. They probably get very fed up of being treated like shit when they are trying to do their jobs.

Brainfogmcfogface · 03/10/2021 21:42

My London gp receptionist, absolutely. Where I am now, absolutely not. I still struggle with how polite people are here nearly a decade after moving out of London.. kinda miss it a bit too if I’m honest.
