Is it possible and safe to lose weight when pregnant

I am 11 weeks pregnant and have always been up and down with my weight. I've tried many diets and lifestyle changes and at my lowest have been 9 stone. Before pregnancy I was doing quite well but I had a few months of terrible sickness and fatigue and stopped all exercise. Since then I've fallen off the wagon a lot and have been eating whatever I want - usually takeaways and white carbs.

I can see the weight creeping back on again and really don't want to be bigger than I need to be in pregnancy. Has anyone got any tips for managing my weight? It's hard because I feel completely off certain foods (mostly veg!) and I've stopped meal planning because I just never know what I'm going to fancy from one day to the next. Any tips appreciated.

Don't worry about losing weight focus on eating healthy throughout your pregnancy rather than losing or piling more on.

I'm not being deliberately evasive. I don't actually have scales in the house so im not sure. But when I got weighed at the midwives for my booking appointment I was 11st2 and I suspect I've put more on since then.

Losing weight during pregnancy is bad for the baby.

If after the birth you breastfeed and don’t overeat, the weight will fall off quickly.

I disagree with both of these statements.
Losing weight was not bad for the baby and it was better for me.
I did not lose any weight due to breast feeding at all.

I also sort of disagree. Likes many women with hg I’ve lost a lot of weight in first trimester (& I didn’t need to lose any weight beforehand) and baby is fine. BUT, it didn’t feel fine at all for baby in later stages. I’d be busy at work and skipping meals and went in for monitoring for reduced kicking and the midwife sent my husband to buy food for me to eat right away, which really lifted my awareness.

Also never lost any weight breastfeeding!

My friend lost 3 stone while pregnant. She did weighwatchers - as recommended by her midwife, and went swimming 3 times a week.

...it might have been slimming world rather than weight watchers, whichever one is it was, it was approved by her midwive, this was about 5 years ago.

@MrsSkylerWhite

You really need professional advice, not opinions from largely unqualified people.
This ^^

Have you been told you're overweight? If not then I'd be concerned this is the start of disordered eating.

If you need to limit weight gain under medical advice because you are already overweight you could do slimming world or follow the gestational diabetes diet from now, regardless of whether you tesf positive for it or not.

You really should speak to a medical professional.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/10/2021 05:13

If you eat healthily without starving yourself and cut down on rubbish like crisps, chocolate etc and obviously restricting/cutting out alcohol, then you will naturally reduce any excess body fat that you have, while not risking development of your growing baby.

As a couple of others have said, slimming world is safe and medically approved in pregnancy because it's just simple healthy eating. You don't have to follow it to the letter, just the general principles.
