Went out tonight for the first time in forever and had 3 cocktails
1st place £10.50 for a cocktail
2nd place £13.50
3rd place £11.00
£35 for 3 drinks!

Is it just me that thinks this is so expensive
I haven't been out for a while and this shocked me

@ShowOfHands

I went to London with friends recently and was agog at the cocktails on offer. The woman in front of me ordered something ridiculously named and it was an entire show watching the bar staff putting it together. It had herbs in it, celery, a steak probably, an umbrella, alcohol, fruit. There was shaking and mixing and an honest to God pirouette from a bar man. It just went on and on. Seventeen English pounds! Cost more than my dinner and was more of a faff.

I asked for an orange and cranberry juice. The bar staff looked at me like I'd vomited on their shoes. Shoved it in a crappy little glass, no pizzazz. I asked the price and she shrugged and asked me "I don't know, a quid?" I offered £2 if she'd let me have an umbrella. She chucked one next to the glass and told me to keep my money. She clearly wanted me to get out of her sight.

Orange and cranberry juice would be more than a pound even in wethies....I think you are telling fibs🙄

Bloody loved a Woo Woo in my youth!

Cocktails are sooo expensive haha. We only ever go during Happy Hour when drinks are 2 for 1. Why pay £9 for one drink when you can pay £9 for two drinksGrinluckily in London most places have happy hour from 3pm-7pm which works out to be perfect

BeaLola · 02/10/2021 21:36

I paid £16 yesterday for 1 glass of rose and 1 beer which I was a bit Shock at (was at a shopping centre)

Cocktails have to me seemed to be the same price for ages - I dont begrudge a well made one - last good one I had was visiting Newcastle a few months ago - lovely negroni

ufucoffee · 02/10/2021 21:36

Been out tonight in my city. Cocktails £7.50

ThinWomansBrain · 02/10/2021 22:07

@Sparklesocks Love nightjar! there's also a sister bar in Smithfield Market, Oriole. (marginally closer to home).

This evening being a cheapskate - mohito "mocktail" from Aldi, which is surprisingly good for 40p, even better with a slug of white rum.

FangsForTheMemory · 02/10/2021 22:13

I had a cocktail at the Savoy a couple of years ago. Can’t remember what but it was £17 and included a plate of nibbles but no plastic monkey.

AlbertBridge · 02/10/2021 22:16

I've recently become hooked on "Bar Rescue" on Amazon Prime, and they always say that cocktails are where the money is. The mark-up on a cocktail is LOADS more than on wine or beer. They're like 300% overpriced.

YourFinestPantaloons · 02/10/2021 22:17

I agree, I'm agog that people pay these prices when a G&T costs £4

Snowdropsandbluebells · 02/10/2021 22:19

Oh that's expensive but it's about that here too.

I always just get one instead of a dessert.
Enjoy we've been cooped up long enough (says mme driving cheapo aldi mini wine Grin )

SummersOverSeasideTown · 02/10/2021 22:20

@SylvanasWindrunner

We used to get one of those giant fishbowl things at the local chain place for a tenner Grin Woo Woos!
Oh I miss those days. Grin

Not in a decent bar. I paid £8 for a GnT last night.
shas19 · 02/10/2021 22:25

Alchemist do a happy hour also! I like making them at home but it is alot of faff so don't begrudge the money sometimes

Huge fan of a plastic monkey or sword. Class. Pure class that is! Grin
idontlikealdi · 02/10/2021 22:26

A double g&t will set you back around £14, prices have gone through the roof.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/10/2021 22:28

I went out last night and was shocked by £9 for a pornstar martini. But it was BOGOF. Which I really don't agree with either as is encourages irresponsible drinking.

YourFinestPantaloons · 02/10/2021 22:30

@HelloDulling it depends where you are I suppose. £4 even in nice bars is standard here

burnoutbabe · 02/10/2021 22:31

I had a lovely cocktail in a New York Hilton for $30 or so.

But effectively it was the entrance price for a high level revolving bar!

Luckily it was nice and fruity, lots of then are sour!

mimillion · 02/10/2021 22:39

@ratliiie Come through to Durham and go to the Slug and Lettuce, it used to be a bit of a dive but it's quite nice now and the cocktails are fab and 2 for 1 all the time!

ISpyCobraKai · 02/10/2021 22:42

@ShowOfHands
They'd probably spit in my tap water as that's my drink of choice!

DumplingsAndStew · 02/10/2021 22:45

There's definitely snobbery for Wetherspoons, but you can at least get a whole jug of cocktail for less than a tenner Wink

ShowOfHands · 02/10/2021 22:46

I swear to God it's true re the orange and cranberry.

No idea what a wethies is though.

ISpyCobraKai · 02/10/2021 22:50

Wetherspoons.
I believe you though, you've been here forever, why would you make that up?Confused

ratliiie · 02/10/2021 23:01

@mimillion love the slug and lettuce,I like the champagne bar next door too but that is a bit pricey too 🙈

HungryHippo11 · 02/10/2021 23:07

Its a lot, the mark up is huge.
I would rather spend £35 on a meal. For that much I could get a 2 of even 3 course meal and drink in a good restaurant and it would last me a few hours. Rather than a cocktail which is gone in half an hour.
