To not scrub everything down and throw things away anytime I see a fly in my house?

Fly roaming around my downstairs last night - I hate the things and never know where they've been, how long they've been around, or what they've touched - but even so I just think they're inevitable. Sister immediately 1) chucked all of my utensils that usually sit in a pot on the kitchen side, in the dishwasher, even though we didn't actually see the fly on the utensils, 2) put her jumper in the wash as it landed on her, and 3) told me I needed to throw away a mug because the fly did land on the rim and 'the dishwasher won't kill the germs and you risk getting maggots in the dishwasher'.

I'm usually pretty hygeine conscious - and would probably throw away any food a fly definitely landed on, and wipe a side I definitely saw a fly on, but that's it. Should I be doing more is my sister's reaction over the top?!

Shes batshit!

UpInTheAttic · 02/10/2021 16:53

I'm not one to throw around diagnoses but I'd be really worried she could be suffering from MH issues. That's not normal at all.

Waspsarearseholes · 02/10/2021 16:53

Oh that's really pathetic of your sister. How on earth does she get anything done if she's doing all this every time she sees a fly?

genericuserneeded · 02/10/2021 16:55

Wow, throwing away kitchen utensils/crockery/cutlery over this? You’re not made of money! Her reaction is over the top

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 02/10/2021 16:57

That's ott of course. Sounds like an exhausting way to live. Flys are urgh but a fact of life. Your reaction is proportionate to limit their contamination, for anything else you have an immune system.

Summersun2020 · 02/10/2021 16:58

Hahahahaha your sister is a fucking lunatic Grin this is one of the funniest things I’ve ever read on here, I can’t even believe you needed to ask 😂

Notimeforaname · 02/10/2021 17:01

I think she's mad or has a phobia of germs.

and would probably throw away any food a fly definitely landed on.. flies land on the table and plates when outdoor dining..are you supposed to hand the plate back each time and ask the table to be wiped down ?

thecatneuterer · 02/10/2021 17:07

Maggots in the dishwasher!!!! OMG. I mean it's all crazy but that just takes the biscuit.

DotsandCo · 02/10/2021 17:09

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

AFuturisticalSound · 02/10/2021 17:13

This can't be serious, surely I'm not the only person who does nothing if they see a fly? Wouldn't you end up crazy if you were reacting like that all the time?

Presumably your sister has had some kind of recent behavioural change or this wouldn't be any kind of surprise to you. Do you know what might have triggered it?

EmeraldShamrock · 02/10/2021 17:16

Hmm I wouldn't bin them but I'd definitely re-wash them if a blue bottle fly was free for a night in my kitchen, I've seen them eat squished slug, feeding on dog shit.
A normal fly would be okay.
In my defence I've a phobia of blue bottle flies.
When we first moved in there was a rotting bird in the chimney by day 2 the place was swarming. I scrubbed the room top to bottom.

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/10/2021 17:20
Hmm
loopylindi · 02/10/2021 17:27

Flies do have a disgusting habit of regurgitating what they've just eaten , treading it to liquid then sucking it up again - sorry! I too don't worry too much about regular flies but blue/green bottles drive me batshit crazy. I can't stand the noise they make. I have a can of flyspray in every room and find a 1sec burst usually does the trick!

Tulipomania · 02/10/2021 17:29

Lots of cluster flies around at the moment. DH hoovers them off the walls and ceiling.

Somethingsnappy · 02/10/2021 17:41

On a serious note, that sounds a bit like OCD to me or something similar. I think you must know that isn't a normal reaction.

Tal45 · 02/10/2021 17:46

Don't throw things away because of a fly - does she not realise most food comes from outdoors and will have had a fly on it at some time - has she never eaten an apple??? Jesus think of the environmental impact if everyone threw things away because they'd had a bug on them. Please don't listen to your crazy sister.

Soubriquet · 02/10/2021 17:47

Sounds a bit excessive. I would never stop cleaning if I had to do that everytime a fly landed on something

KeyWorker · 02/10/2021 17:51

How come the dishwasher is good for the utensils but not for the mug? 🤷‍♀️Confused

NewlyGranny · 02/10/2021 17:52

Talk your DS out of any plans she may ever have for moving to or holidaying in Australia. 😳

lljkk · 02/10/2021 18:01

those of us with pets just divert animal's attention towards the buzzy thing.

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/10/2021 18:02

She's sadly lacking in biological knowledge if she thinks germs on a cup give rise to fly maggots.

GladAllOver · 02/10/2021 18:06

That's what spiders are for!

ThinWomansBrain · 02/10/2021 18:10

Batshit.
She probably doesn't like bats either.
Was she like that when you were growing up, or your parents like that?

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/10/2021 18:10

I'd be suggesting the doctor. That level of behaviour isn't healthy.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 02/10/2021 18:16

I think your sister is a bit too hygienic. However I am not a good person to ask as I have one of those sticky dangling fly lines with about 40 dead fly bodies stuck to it. 🪰🪰🪰 have just thrown it away as it has finally gone cold. Don't think your sis will be dashing round here for a cup of tea.
