Neighbour has shared ring doorbell footage of me

Online. It's been plastered all over Facebook. It has been shared due to a bin theft of their bin when it was left on the pavement for two days after collection.

I have a very nasty ex partner. Apart from the ex partner situation it shows me coming home from work - it's pretty obvious I am coming in from work, in the evening, in the dark - the house is empty.

Is there anything I can do other than ask them to remove it (which I have asked; they have said no)?

Call non emergency police for advice? They may send a pcso round to ask them to take it down. If you emphasise how it’s putting your safety at risk. Why won’t they take it down? Are you in the background of the picture?

SquareWindow · 02/10/2021 10:31

Why have they shared footage of you arriving home from work? Does it relate in any way to the bin theft?
Can you report it to Facebook?

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 02/10/2021 10:31

They may be in breach of GDPR

ButterflyBitch · 02/10/2021 10:32

Can you ask them to take it down and edit your face out and then put it back up? Sorry just trying to think of options but I don’t really know.

Mamamia7962 · 02/10/2021 10:32

Does it show someone actually stealing their bin?

TheVolturi · 02/10/2021 10:33

Why a picture of you though?

beela · 02/10/2021 10:33

Report to Facebook?

PotteringAlong · 02/10/2021 10:33

Were you stealing their bin?

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 02/10/2021 10:33

“ You also need to make sure you respect the data protection rights of the people whose images you capture. This includes the following things: Deleting footage of people if they ask you to do so. You should do this within one month. You can refuse to delete it if you specifically need to keep it for a genuine legal dispute – in which case you need to tell them this, and also tell them they can challenge this in court or complain to the ICO.”

This ^^

Good luck OP, they sound like very nasty fuckers.

Propertysearch · 02/10/2021 10:34

Did you steal the bin? Is the video showing you as a culprit or does it just happen to show you incidentally?
I don’t know what you can do as you’ve already asked them to take it down. I have cctv but would not put footage on social media. I’ve given some to the police before though.
If you’re concerned that you are shown and the matter doesn’t involve you then report to Facebook perhaps?

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 02/10/2021 10:35

And guidance on requesting deletion here:

Fishinkles · 02/10/2021 10:35

To be honest I think there bin has been "taken hostage" because they always leave it out and it's annoying people with double prams - I don't think it's actually been stolen per se, but yes you can see the bin being "stolen".

It's in so many bloody groups though that it's also not just a case of removing the original video - they've shared it with friends who have also uploaded it.

I do think it is a breech of GDPR / DPA but I really just need quick solutions, Facebook may be the way to go - let me see if they have an online chat function.

YANBU, ask them to take it down and if they don’t speak to 101.

It’s only being on Nextdoor that’s made me realise whistle most people in my area are lovely, there are some right bloody eejits.

Propertysearch · 02/10/2021 10:37

Did you take the bin and if so have you thought about releasing it?

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 02/10/2021 10:37

Facebook will be worse than useless in my experience. I’d formalise it with the neighbours (they probably aren’t aware they have duties as data controllers because of the CCTV so need to think again about how they use the recordings) and hope that gets them moving.

HumunaHey · 02/10/2021 10:41

People are so trigger happy with plastering tgings all over Facebook these days.

Are the police aware of your abusive ex? If so, I would inform them of the video stating you feel at risk. They might be able to help in those circumstances.

Cadent · 02/10/2021 10:42

Why would she take the bin?! They have a camera!
EishetChayil · 02/10/2021 10:44

I don't get what the video shows. You, moving the bin? Someone else moving the bin with you in the background? We need specifics here!

Fishinkles · 02/10/2021 10:45

The police were aware, yes - but due to the length of time that has since past (and apparently he's "rehabilitated" they are not so interested now (only know this as I had an issue registering to vote when I moved and I contacted them then to ask for assistance)

OP posts:
Fishinkles · 02/10/2021 10:47

I had nothing to do with the bin being moved, the angle of the camera means I am walking into my property whilst the bin is being taken hostage - so it gives my address (there's a street name sign opposite), time I return from work, and identifies me.

Normally reasonable neighbours but they aren't being about this.

I may email to avoid confrontation but FFS surely they could have asked me prior to uploading it (and I would have said no)

OP posts:
Cuddlyrottweiler · 02/10/2021 10:50

Have you told them why? I can't imagine caring more about a bloody bin than someone not getting attacked.
They can claim a free one off the council if it's the first time that it's happened.

Propertysearch · 02/10/2021 10:51

I thought it must be you moving the bin. That’s really bad that it is showing you incidentally. I don’t know what you can do because you’ve already done everything sensible.

HumunaHey · 02/10/2021 10:56

Typical!

Has it been posted on any group sites? You could at least ask the admin of those groups to remove it. I'm sure they will.

Aside from this, unfortunately I think you need to beef up your security. Perhaps get your own ring doorbell, etc. Just as s precaution/deterrent.

AnxiousWeirdo · 02/10/2021 11:02

Yes this, if it's shared to groups they'll usually delete the post. Otherwise good luck, this is a really crappy situation.
