To think we should be able to work from home?

We have an INSET day next week and although there is a meeting and a CPD session large chunks of the day will just be planning and assessment based.

AIBU to think we don’t actually need to be in school? (Am a teacher!)

Why does that bother you?

It doesn’t.

Like I say, I’m just not sure what you want from it. It doesn’t sound like you’ll do anything about it.

Xmasbaby11 · 02/10/2021 09:29

I agree op. I'm a teacher at university, and while we are back to teaching face to face, any elements that can be online like meetings, training and planning, have moved online. We find meetings work so well online. I used to be in 100% of the time and now it is more like 60%. There is the option to come in and work if people prefer it.

LongAndDarkDecember · 02/10/2021 09:29

No but then that applies to any number of threads here! To be honest, when I’m seeking serious life advice, AIBU is NOT my first port of call …

But when we can WFH, saving petrol and commuting times and costs and so on, isn’t it sensible to do so, even if only for a day?

Not necessarily. When you applied for your role and signed the contract, you did so on the understanding that you would need to commute to a workplace and pay the associated travelling costs. You still went ahead with the job. WFH may be more convenient for you, but fundamentally your contract hasn’t changed so you don’t have a leg to stand on. They’re within their rights to ask you to come to the office regardless

TheKeatingFive · 02/10/2021 09:36

Sure

But the question you’ve posed is very broad and I think with all these wfh questions it comes down to the individual organisation. ‘Should’ you be able to wfh? Well that depends on what management want to get out of the day.

If they don’t actually know that and no ones pushing them to clarify, then I think it’s very difficult to answer the question you posed.

I’m not a teacher but there are some wierd snotty comments on this thread. As a parent I am so grateful for teachers keeping things going for the kids over the pandemic as best they can. Why shouldn’t teachers be able to join training remotely? YANBU.

LongAndDarkDecember · 02/10/2021 09:37

Have you read the thread, @genericuserneeded? I don’t work in an office.

genericuserneeded · 02/10/2021 09:40

Pedantic but sure? My point still stands regardless. Hope you enjoy your commute to work xxxxx

GladAllOver · 02/10/2021 09:42

Wouldn't your question be better posed on a teachers' forum rather than to random people who know nothing about INSET days?

LongAndDarkDecember · 02/10/2021 09:43

Thanks @DateLoaf, it wasn’t perfect but the whole situation was just a bit difficult!

OP posts:
LongAndDarkDecember · 02/10/2021 09:44

It’s not pedantic at all. I’m not asking about permanently working from home as an alternative to an office. I’m asking about one day. You didn’t read the thread at all!

@GladAllOver not really. Besides, one doesn’t exist.

You're not wrong about a good number of MNers who don't understand INSET days, but it's not the point here. The point is can this training be done online?
GladAllOver · 02/10/2021 10:00

I'm astonished that there isn't an online forum for teachers. Perhaps someone should start one ...

LongAndDarkDecember · 02/10/2021 10:15

I’m honestly not understanding what seems to be niggling you and a couple of others so much here, @GladAllOver

People talk about all sorts on AIBU. I’m any event, it us to a hard situation to understand. It doesn’t require specialist input.

The decision rests entirely with the head.

These are your choices:

  1. Suck it up.
  2. Hand in your notice.
  3. Become a Head.
nofuelshortagehere · 02/10/2021 10:37

Given the current fuel shortage in some areas, perfectly reasonable next week, but I don't think so in general.

LongAndDarkDecember · 02/10/2021 10:39

Why, out of interest?

I’m not asking for advice for my life, thank you @AICM

I WFH.

I hate it when we have a large meeting or training session, that the majority are in an office for, that some stay at home and zoom in. Trying to take notes is a nightmare as there's always a slight lag or people can't speak straightaway.

Then there's always complaints after that someone missed something or didn't feel included.

For a large planning session, I'd want everyone together. I was always the one expected to figure out the IT issues, I don't anymore. If you're zooming in when everyone else is in attendance then I'm not doing the leg work for you.

spanieleyes · 02/10/2021 11:08

We had two INSET days at the beginning of term We we're only required to be in school for the last two hours, when an audit was being completed which meant it was essential to be in the building. The rest was training which could be done remotely. Most people worked from home the first day and went into work the second as they would need to be in for the afternoon for the audit anyway. It was the first time we had run INSET remotely ( although staff meetings are still remote) but it worked for us.

spanieleyes · 02/10/2021 11:10

Were, not we're! Autocorrect, honest😢

GinJeanie · 02/10/2021 11:14

I think you've a point too. Our SLT (special school) all seem to WFH at least once a week nowadays which is obviously a perk not afforded to teaching/support staff. However, I agree re Inset with kids not in. Much of the meetings/training can be done virtually.

Whitefire · 02/10/2021 11:24

Team meetings are rubbish on the likes of Teams, so I can understand why they don't want them. Maybe they feel that from a team building pov being in person is better especially for new staff.
