To want to go on a 'big' holiday after being in hospital?

I recently spent about three weeks in intensive care, and it was fifty fifty if I was going to make it. Totally out of the blue, otherwise seemingly healthy. Doctors don't think what caused it will happen again.

Like many, this illness has made me re-evaluate life. I want to go on holiday somewhere exotic with my family. We have never done long haul as I am a teacher and we can't afford it during school holidays. We usually rent a cottage in the UK. I have this desire to get out and go somewhere far away like the Mauritius or Kenya or the Caribbean ... anywhere far. I'm not talking about staying in ultra luxury. Maybe £5-6k for four of us for the week.

The problem is, dh says no. All he cares about is saving money so that he can retire by 57. He earns about the same as I do, so neither of us are big earners.

Definitely do it. We're doing similar next year. I had cancer last year and the whole thing has made me realise life is too short and absolutely for living.

If you do want to go alone (or with the rest of your family), there are some very nice companies which organise groups trips. Where you have a guide who will help you with everything and a driver. They will suggest restaurants for the group etc. I have done these sorts of trips when single and really recommend them, as a great way to experience a more exotic place and perhaps somewhere less developed for the first time. And in my view the trips are good value, as lots included. And the group is naturally made up of people that want to be on the trip, so at least for the duration of the trip you have a lot in common.

Just go on an adventure if you can :)

Not sure if I can name companies here, but if you pm, i could suggest a few types of things. Safari's are mind blowing especially if you like wildlife and scenery. Namibia and Costa Rica would be my suggestion for first time exotic adventures.

When this covid thing has moved along a bit look to the Far East for an amazing long holiday. I have taken a family of 5 to holidays to Bali, Borneo and Thai islands for less than the cost of easyJet flights to Spain or Greece in august pre-covid. All of those were beach front with own pool, by shopping around with deals for flights.

Do it!!! Something to look forward to and then to enjoy! What a shame about your H, does he not realise it was 50/50 😡

What actually happens when he retires by 57? Does he want to do anything or just exist ??
