I'm having a few extractions and dental implant surgery tomorrow. Has anyone been through this and know what to expect? Please nothing too scary, I'm already terrified!

Hi! I had this last year and I'm not only terrified of the dentist but really squeamish. Just to reassure you: it was totally fine! The extraction bit was super quick and not at all painful or gory - you're completely numb so thats all good. The implant itself was done - for me - over three sessions and the dentist was great. Tbh, had no idea what they were doing, couldn't feel any pain and it was all much better than it had been in my head. The day after was actually a bit harder as you have to take it easy, rest up and be on top of the pain medications but I would honestly try to calm down and just think that it'll be
fine and it'll all be worth it.

Thank you so much!! I really hope it is. I'm terrified of the dentist too 😭

I agree with @Shortyshortcake. You will be numb for the extractions and the next part of the treatment where they fit the metal posts for the implant. Of course it’s all a bit noisy and pushy but not sore at all.

When I went home I iced the area for hours and I didn’t have much swelling. My dentist instructed me to take ibuprofen for the swelling even if I didn’t need it for the pain.

If your extractions are at the front of your mouth then you will have a partial denture for several months until the treatment is complete. That was the most annoying thing for me TBH.

Yes, it's at the front also. An abscess ruined them and the idea of being toothless scared me too much.

Thank you so much

How many teeth are you having out ?

LeaveHomeNow · 01/10/2021 00:58

Sorry. I hated it. I hope you have a better experience than I did. Best of luck.

Lentil63 · 01/10/2021 01:00

I did not enjoy the extraction. I was quite desperate to lose a tooth. The rest was like any quite intensive dentistry. I’m very happy with the results. Please just try and go to your happy. Place. Good luck!

I was under "twilight" anesthesia for mine. I wasn't fully asleep but had no idea what was going on.

SharkAttack200 · 01/10/2021 23:15

Thank you all so much.

I had 'twilight' anesthesia too and that made all of the difference, it was much easier than I thought it would be.

Now I have a retainer for 6 months until I can get the teeth fitted.

How was your recovery?

For me, the extraction was the worst part because the tooth was already fragile from a root canal. It took an hour. But it did not hurt. As with all dental procedures, the injections to administer the anesthetic are the worst part. Once that is over, it is just pressure but not pain.

Dental implant surgery does not hurt. It is nothing unpleasant as a root canal. I don't remember much of it - quite uneventful. Next time a tooth cracks, I am tempted to go straight to implant and skip a root canal. It does cost though.

I’m glad it went OK @SharkAttack200. I iced a lot afterwards so didn’t have a lot of swelling which causes much of the pain.

I needed the painkillers for the first 24 hours, especially the first night ( which you are now through ). My dentist instructed me to take the ibuprofen for the inflammation even if I didn’t need it for the pain . I think that was for 3 days and I also had prophylactic antibiotics. And of course mouthwashes.

If you are having a lot of pain you can paracetamol as well by alternating it with the ibuprofen. I’m sure your dentist will have told you this. I didn’t need anything like this level of pain relief ( and I’m a bit of a wimp with pain ).

I ate carefully for a few ( maybe 5-7 ? ) days, but that was also to avoid dislodging the blood clots and I was getting used to the partial denture.

But I was up to doing my normal routine in the house / work after 48 hours. Like you, I had it done on a Friday so felt fine at work on Monday .

I was told to expect the same level of discomfort when the metal posts were fitted but I found that much easier. I think I just took one dose of pain killers that time, after the local anaesthetic wore off. Just to get me through that first night.

So for you, that might be the worst bit over now.
