AIBU to be aghast at my husband washing up without soap?

I just found my husband doing the washing up with a sponge and water, no washing up liquid. I was a bit shocked and asked him to please use some soap. After I asked him if he's always done that and he said sometimes. He uses soap if something's greasy.... 🤢 AIBU to think this is yuck?

Shock

Yuk, I guess he doesn't wash his hands with soap either! Gross.

idontlikealdi · 30/09/2021 14:35

Mine seems to think it's acceptable to rinse under running water and not actually, you know, scrub food off. Drives me insane.

fallhappy1 · 30/09/2021 14:38

Can't imagine washing the dishes without washing up liquid

RandomLondoner · 30/09/2021 14:46

For cleaning a plate, cup or cutlery I use a scourer and hot water, soap isn't necessary. For pots and pans I'd soak some dishwasher liquid into the scourer.

On the subject of washing without soap, I watched a youtube video of a yachtsman who reckon tying your clothes to a rope and dragging them in the sea behind you was very effective. Until he lost all his underwear to a shark, somewhere between Antarctica and the Falklands.

YANBU! (And good use of the word 'aghast' btw Grin)

EatSleepRantRepeat · 30/09/2021 14:55

God that is grim. The surfactants in the soap are there to dislodge dirt and bacteria - I'd feel sick if someone told me I was drinking from a mug that had just been rinsed. Envy we really need a mumsnet vom emoji!

arootintootingoodtime · 30/09/2021 15:10

Well, just water isn't going to clean it so YA definitely NBU!

Bamaluz · 30/09/2021 15:20

That's not washing, it's just getting things wet.

LaBellina · 30/09/2021 15:24

That’s not proper cleaning at all and indeed very yuck. Does he wash his clothes without detergent as well and does he think the inside of the toilet, the sink and bath/shower never need cleaning because of the water that passes trough it?

Hahahaha. I love it that a shark ate all his underwear 😂

You don't think it's necessary to use soap to wash a cup or fork that has been inside someone's mouth?

Hugsgalore · 30/09/2021 15:29

I have also caught my husband doing this with cups and glasses in particular. Is just wrong!

SusieBob · 30/09/2021 15:31

YANBU. Although hot water alone will kill a lot of nasties, as most people don't use super hot water washing up liquid is needed. It's also needed to ensure the actual sponges etc stay bacteria-free and helps with the removal of grease etc.

Also air-drying is far preferable to using tea-towels.

AgentProvocateur · 30/09/2021 15:36

I do use soap, but having lived in Malaysia and watched plates etc being washed in only a bucket of tepid water at food stalls (and never being ill) I think it’s probably unnecessary.

shouldistop · 30/09/2021 15:40

That's disgusting. Does he just rinse his hands with water when he's been to the toilet?

GhostCurry · 30/09/2021 18:08

Ugh, these are the worst items not to use soap on as people actually put their lips against them (unlike plates, bowls knives etc). The rims would be covered with lip balm, general mouth junk and bacteria Envy

Apparently common amongst students, it can cause real problems. An accommodation manager told me that at Uni & advised always to use washing up liquid.

suspiria777 · 30/09/2021 18:34

that's not washing, that's wetting.
