Should dd have a brace ?

Dd is 11 and hates her double chin. We tell her she is beautiful but she feels self conscious. We recently spoke to our local orthodontist and he didn’t think she needed a brace. I am wondering if a brace would strengthen her jaw line but reluctant to make a thing of it. I have attached a photo.

You've had a lot of answers on your thread in Children's Health OP. I'll give my answer again.

Does your DD have an overbite? Her chin looks like my DD's chin and my DD had a big overbite but her NHS dentist agreed she needed braces.

Does your DD have one or are her teeth aligned properly?

It is probably too early to determine her eventual jawline. Unless the teeth are functionally affected( ie bite does not meet) it would be costly and invasive to have a brace to correct it.

I dont see how a brace would help. You wouldn't get funding so would need to pay privately. Could you get a 2nd opinion?

What makes you think a brace would help?

How will a brave fix a double chin? Isn't a double chin just...chub?

Sally872 · 30/09/2021 09:37

I think if orthodontist says no brace needed I would believe them.

I have heard of people with and having braces to bring bottom teeth back behind front teeth if needed. But not sure if they could 'strengthen jaw line' not an expert though.

My dd is 11 and self conscious about many things, none of them are a real problem. I think/hope it is just a stage and she will start to feel more confident/less bothered soon. I try to read positive affirmations here and there and build self esteem as much as possible.

I think OP...and others are mistaking a WEAK chin for a double chin.

The DD's pic certainly seems to show a weak chin. My own DD had one due to her overbite.

That's why I asked OP if her DD has an overbite.

Was it a private orthodontist?

Because NHS orthodontist will almost certainly say NO, and private orthodontist will almost certainly say YES.

Okay this makes more sense.

The photo does not have the child positioned correctly in order to be able to properly assess the skeletal pattern. Saying that from the photo I would say it looks a normal skeletal class I pattern and your daughter does not have a ‘weak chin’
