With parents who don’t like walking?

It’s our last morning in London and we have only two hours to kill, we’re staying on Gower Lane (Belgravia?)
Just looking for something quick, quirky maybe. Cabs are an option. We also have a baby in a pram!

Thanks I’m advance

I echo the suggestions above re The British Museum, The British Library, or just mooching round Coal Drops Yard.

Also, the Charles Dickens Museum isn't too far away and is well worth a look. It's basically just a beautiful Georgian house where Dickens lived for a few years and contains a lot of information about his life and memorabilia. It would probably take 45 minutes, so not too ambitious in terms of time or energy, whereas the BM might be a bit overwhelming, unless you pick a specific exhibition as a pp suggested.

I hope you have a lovely day!

Another vote for British Library.

fabricstash · 30/09/2021 09:17

British museum every time. Very close

@Motnight

How about the Wellcome Collection on Euston Road?
The Tranquillity exhibition there is lovely at present.

One of the tiny museums. You're right near UCL and they have a few, there's a really weird zoology one on Gower St itself IIRC (remembering from uni days!), also wellcome collection, foundling museum and Dickens museum all in walking distance!

Gay's the Word bookshop on Marchmont Street. Brilliant array of books, run by lovely staff. Lovely cafe next door, and near to the Brunswick centre where there are some other cafes too.

Gncq · 30/09/2021 09:21

I'd just find a cafe to wait in myself, especially seeing you have a baby in tow and grown ups who don't like walking, and only 2 hours.
Museum/gallery trips can take a whole day, by the time you've worked out how to get in it'll be time for you to leave!

Canal Museum is nice and small and not overwhelming. New Wharf Road near Kings X
The stables were on an upper floor!?

CaptaNoctem · 30/09/2021 09:24

A trip to one of the wonderful London book shops and a stop for coffee and cake would be my solution

lottiegarbanzo · 30/09/2021 09:25

I'd go to the British Museum. Even the cafe, in the huge atrium, is spectacular. You can look at one or two things e.g. 'Elgin marbles, mummies' then leave, because it's free.

Wellcome Collection is quirky and interesting (if they're readers, there's usually minimal 'stuff', you need to read to get the benefit).

British Library has an exhibition about Paddington Bear and a cafe.

crowsfeet57 · 30/09/2021 09:29

The Harry Potter shop at Kings X keeps me amused for an hour or so!

Sexy Fish is really close by, and has a cheaper set menu in the day - it's quite a swanky menu and enjoyable for people watching.

Malin52 · 30/09/2021 09:38

I find the British Museum is the worlds most tedious museum. Boring as hell exhibits. There's only so many Greek statues and pot bits one can admire. Plus it's massive so non walkers won't be thrilled and it's packed to the gunnels with dead eyed tourists. If you must have a museum then Wellcome Collection is nearby and v interesting.

Two hours before a train I'd be popping off to Kings Cross/St Pancras area for brunch and relaxing. Bloomsbury to Kings Cross can sometimes be an unexpected traffic disaster if you leave it too late and the tube stations take remarkably long to exit!

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 30/09/2021 09:39

Sexy Fish is miles away!

doublemonkey · 30/09/2021 09:43

Definitely try the Wellcome collection which is very near by. They have a cafe and a restaurant too and a lovely library with comfy Ercol chairs to lounge on.

Joystir59 · 30/09/2021 09:54

I'd smack it over the head with a limp tube map

PurpleFlower1983 · 30/09/2021 10:03

British Museum as it’s right by where you are, or there is a nice café in Russell Square.

littlefireseverywhere · 30/09/2021 10:11

Yes, I'd wander round the British museum and have a coffee there too.
