to think my smart speaker is over-stepping her boundaries? (light-hearted)

So, in a move to reduce the number of screens we use I've introduced a smart speaker into our house. It's doing exactly what we wanted - playing audiobooks, answering random questions, etc. Today, I thought I'd try using the Shopping List facility.

Me: speaker's name can you add drinking glasses to the shopping list?
Speaker: I've added glasses to your shopping list.
Speaker: So, I can keep a record of who is adding items to the shopping list, is this DH's name?

  • pause-
Speaker: Is this DH's name?

I unplugged her.

I find this creepy, AIBU? I didn't ask it to keep tabs on who is adding what to the shopping list and I don't want it to "keep tabs" or whatever the actual wording was that it used.

I think I've been triggered by an inanimate object Grin , but this is creepy, right? It's just future weird.

Not really. It lets you know that the small child has added seventeen multipacks of quavers to the shopping list, and that the partner has added loo roll and fusilli.

It’s to help you filter.

Incredibly creepy - but then again, I wouldn't tolerate one of the things in the house at all, especially not if it's an alexa - the amount of data and monitoring amazon collect on people who use any of their products or visit the large swathes of the internet that use amazon web services is deeply creepy and far beyond what is needed to provide the services it does www.bbc.co.uk/news/extra/CLQYZENMBI/amazon-data

Alexa started playing Barry White to my husband.

I think she was trying to seduce him.

Yes, I think I’m going to leave her unplugged when not in use in future.

Her question had odd vibes. I’m clearly not my husband. It was a bit like - who are you - not DH person - adding things to DH’s shopping list. Even my DH doesn’t check who added things to our shopping list so Amazon’s Alexa can do one. I’ll use paper instead.

Is it because separate people could have separate shopping lists?

I have been betrayed this week. My parents got DS an alexa for his birthday. I set it up using my amazon login. On Monday morning, alexa told DS that 'cat kid...' was out for delivery today (one of his stocking fillers from santa). He didnt say anything and then saw the parcel being delivered. I quickly learned how to turn off those notifications!

MangoBiscuit · 29/09/2021 17:55

We all chuck stuff on the shopping lists on Alexa, she's never asked us who's talking. I like ours, we've set up loads of routines. If you tell her to roll for initiative, she starts playing battle music!

This is because they are developed by men so the algorithms work better at understanding male voices. It's like the passport office's photo checker is developed by white people so is more likely to reject black faces.
InconvenientPeg · 29/09/2021 17:59

Ours policies the music we play (it's pretty much all we use it for apart from timing for cooking) she won't play anything my DS17 asks for 🤣 I suspect it's his accent but it's very funny when she puts the spice girls on instead of Kasia.

Not your uplifted
Mine does what I say but ignores my husband. I told him it was because he never says please or thank you 😂

PuppyMonkey · 29/09/2021 18:00

It’s the voice recognition thing - you can set it up so it knows who is speaking because it recognises your voice. I think she was trying to encourage you to set it up. If you didn’t want her to do it, you just needed to say “Alexa exit.”

crj123 · 29/09/2021 18:02

We've got Alexas all over the goddam house; not usually a problem until one of the bastards randomly said "hello" around 4am. No idea why but I shit myself and responded "hello god, is that you?"

My partner came in one evening (not realising I was home) and said "Alexa, daddy's home". When I told a friend about it she said "if that thing ever learns to give BJs you're out of there" GrinGrinGrin
DragonDoor · 29/09/2021 18:11

I don’t really find it creepy that smart speaker was trying to establish who was operating it. Different users can set up particular accounts etc

I would actually prefer if mine did this, and of course only took orders from me Grin
