To send baby to nursery who can't nap independently?

And will they curse me for it?!

My son is 8 months and is starting nursery in a few weeks.

He only ever naps during the day either on me, in a pram or in the car. I don't need to rock him often anymore but he won't just be put down in his cot to nap. The only time he did that by himself was when he was absolutely exhausted after his first swimming lesson when he was couldn't keep his eyes open, would have slept on a log style tired.

He is very good at night (touch wood) so I've never felt the need to sleep train, it's just day time naps he struggles with.

Is this normal in a nursery? What will they do? I have tried to pop him down in the day but he screams and screams whenever I leave the room, once to the point of vomitting and I just can't leave him like that.

My son never napped with me unless he was on me, or in the car.

He napped fine at nursery.

As many others have said, you may be surprised how differently your child will nap at nursery. I would say that a good nursery will be reassuring you that they will hold them, rock them etc if needed and not just to put them in a cot at their set times. Mine went at 5 months and 9 months. Neither ever took a nap in a cot at home or self-settled but both could be put down in a cot with a quick back rub at nursery pretty much from day 1.

All my grandchildren nap fine at nursery irritated their parents no end, they also napped with me. It's a mummy thing

My 2 never napped for me independently, but napped just fine at nursery. (Would love to know how they do it but that’s just one of life’s mysteries - along side getting them to eat stuff they would turn their noses up to at home)

On the flip side of this my DS would only sleep in his cot for naps and I was equally worried when he started nursery that he wouldn’t sleep but he did - he slept in a pushchair for all of his naps in the first room and now he’s moved up a room he sleeps on the floor. Nursery workers can work miracles and little ones are far more flexible than we give them credit for sometimes!

Both of mine only napped on me (I am the definition of a Soft Touch) but napped like dream babies at nursery/childminder.
DD sleeps at the childminders in a pram with a room of 3 year old whirlwinds!
DS was cuddled to sleep by his nursery nurses, they then hug and rolled him into a cot and bum patted while they did their documentation.

Nursery I work at - we just take babies like that out for a quick walk around the garden in the buggy initially ! Then eventually we get them napping with the others ! It happens :) don’t worry

My own baby is 6 months and I can only get her to nap out or on me .. my mum was here last week and she got her to sleep no bother 🙈🤷‍♀️

Our nursery has an old silver cross pram for each baby, they’ll either push around the garden or park under a pergola if the baby doesn’t need pushing. They do have a few acres of garden but it worked perfectly for our little girl.

@NoNap expelled from nursery 😂😂 that made me laugh.

But seriously, nursery workers know how to handle it. I asked my DSs nursery about how they get all the kids to sleep, even the ones who need a special routine for naps, and they were like parents don’t believe that we can get their child to sleep, but we do!

My DS only napped on me. He started nursery at the beginning of the month at 10.5 months and he now naps there every day, in a cot, for 90 min! He held out the first few day but they have napping sorcery.

Wondergirl100 · 29/09/2021 14:36

He will nap. It's amazing but they all do.
