To ask for your sebaceous dermatitis remedies??

Badgergirl123 · 28/09/2021 17:27

I've had sebaceous dermatitis since I was a young child. I think I've tried every over-the-counter and prescription shampoo going, and nothing really makes a difference. Sometimes it worse than others, but I am utterly, utterly fed up with it. Only time it ever seemed to get substantially better was when I was taking 20mg of prednisolone daily for an unrelated condition.

Does anyone have any suggestions for something I may have missed?? Willing to give anything a go!!

Do you get eczema too?

Only thing that has worked for me (have both conditions) is prevention, removing all detergents containing sulphates and going low/no shampoo.

I switched first to a shampoo bar - a nettle one for itchy scalp. It took a while for my hair to settle down. I got down to only needing to wash once per week. (I have curly hair so it might depend on hair texture).

Now I just rinse my hair in water every three days and spray with a little Palmers coconut oil after drying. If I get any flare ups of SD, I wash once with a tiny amount of Tgel then go back to the shampoo bar for a couple of washes.

I'll suggest Aveeno skin relief soothing shampoo if you can. (It's expensive but often goes on sale).

Also, i'll suggest no conditioner. It can exacerbate the issue.

Actually, you can try no conditioner first for a few weeks and see how it goes.

TremoloGreen · 28/09/2021 17:50

It hasn't totally got rid of the itch/flake but it's manageable now and not painful/super scaly like before.

LanisHouseLot · 28/09/2021 17:52

The website called (I think) deconstructing dandruff is incredibly useful - it covers seb derm on scalp and face.

ADreadedSunnyDay · 28/09/2021 17:53

I started with this last year. It's extremely wearing. The itching was keeping me awake at night. So i tried the GP anti fungal stuff and then a different shampoo. Didn't work. coconut oil didn't work.

Head and Shoulders itchy scalp is sort of working - but only if I leave 5 days between washes.

Badgergirl123 · 28/09/2021 18:16

@tremologreen I do get mild eczema elsewhere and super dry skin on my face so it always looks a bit red. I've tried going no or low shampoo before but it seemed to get worse the greasier my hair got until it was unbearable. I only wash it about once a week now.

Thanks @lanishouselot I'll have a look at that website tonight

Carnivore diet. Nothing to touch it for skin stuff.

5zeds · 28/09/2021 18:23

Capasal to strip out any build up.

Henna soothes mine unexpectedly.

Being very clean as I appear to be allergic to my own sweat/oily hair. Shock

Avoiding pony tails/hats or letting hair out to “air” regularly.

Phonelightmidnight · 28/09/2021 18:25

Have you tried nizoral?

Gastropod · 28/09/2021 18:28

This Ducray shampoo

And if needed on face, either Eau Thermale d'Avene Cicalfate cream just on localised patches, or Kiehls midnight recovery concentrate instead of moisturiser at night.

I rarely am troubled with it at all now, whereas a few years ago it was the bane of my life.

Starrycolors23 · 28/09/2021 18:29

Ah this is helpful for DH. He uses Nizoral but it still is bad every day. Going to try removing sulphites and nettle bar

Agree. All my skin, weight and stomach issues stop the moment I stick to this. Trouble is, I fail 😩
Badgergirl123 · 28/09/2021 18:58

I find nizirol can make it slightly better if it's awful, but doesn't really make much difference beyond that. I haven't tried Ducray so will give that a go @gastropod

I do tend to tie my hair up all the time @5zeds and it's particularly bad for the scaly bits at the crown so that's something to think about

Nizoral suddenly stopped working for me a few years ago so switched to the Ducray. Was prescribed originally by a dermatologist, till I realised I can get it on Amazon! Smells lovely and doesn't feel like a "medicated" shampoo at all.

Badgergirl123 · 28/09/2021 19:21

@TheSquashyHatOfMrGnosspelius have to admit I've never heard of the carnivore diet, I was a vegetarian for a long time and not sure I could manage it! No fruit and veg? I wonder how it works to make skin better? I'm intrigued if nothing else!!

Is it a particular one from the Ducray range that you use @Gastropod? There seems to be a few when I look on Amazon.

Yes, it's the one called Kelual DS.

For me selenium is the magic ingredient in shampoos. I’m currently using a Vichy one, I only use it every 2 weeks or so now that I’m in an under control stage, I’m using OGX apple cider vinegar shampoo the rest of the time. I can’t go longer than 2 days between hair washing - I have oily hair, and I start itching if I go longer.

For my face (I’ve had it really badly on my face) I stumbled upon The Ordinary squalane cleanser combined with their niaciamide & zinc serum. If I stick to these two my skin stays clear.

If my skin is having a flare up I use moo goo irritable skin balm. I love this stuff. They (moo goo) actually do a cream for seb derm (called scalp cream) but I found irritable skin cream better.

The carnivore diet is like hitting the reset button for everything.

Add in plenty of animal fat. Plants have chemicals in to prevent themselves being eaten. We can react to these in lots of ways. Try it for a month.

I use Selsun shampoo for my daughter, has made a big difference.

Still1nLove · 29/09/2021 06:26

I use selsun shampoo. I had to order it online as I couldn’t find it in the chemist
