to think that ds's college tutor is possibly homophobic?

ds2 does one day a week at college studying hairdressing and one day a week at a salon hairdresing is what he wants to do when he leaves school.
anyhoooo his tutor (female) on the college course has always appeared to have a problem with him,its either attitude, behaviour, not listening, written work could be better (hes severely dyslexic ffs!) etc...
now 2 weeks ago there was "an incident" with him and 2 of the girls on the course where ds was alledgedly "screaming in a high pitched tone and wavihg his arms around" (what gay lad doesnt do that?!!!) as he thought his dolls head was burning! and the girls were messing around and poured a whole tub of conditioner on a dolls head.
the tutor then criticised his written work, which learning support say is was normal standard for him, and is refusing to take him back on the course,BUT only him,the girls are continuing with the course.
now i dont want to be a mum who "plays the homophobic card" but wtf?
kicking someone of a course because he was "screaming in a high pitched tone and wavihg his arms around"
hes never had a problem at school with behaviour and the salon owner where he works thinks the sun shines out of his rear end!
so AIBU to think homophobia could be behind this?

Also if he is under 16, we as teachers are in a "loco parentis" situation. I don't know if this is the same at FE college, but as he IS under 16 I suspect it may be the same, that is why I find the fag issue so odd.........

Am intrigued by inappropriate use of hairdryers (tee hee) Sounds hilarious.

Do tell........

sounds hilarious unless you were the one trying to run the session

Oh come on, I've had kids who do "inappropriate stuff", so has every teacher I know. Horrid and stressful at the time, but very amusing later on

"now 2 weeks ago there was "an incident" with him and 2 of the girls on the course where ds was alledgedly "screaming in a high pitched tone and wavihg his arms around" (what gay lad doesnt do that?!!!) "

the only homophobic thing i have seen so far in this thread is the part you put in brackets. i'd imagine a lot of gay men don't run around waving their arms and screaming in much the same way that a lot of straight men don't take part in such activity.

fizzbuzz · 07/12/2007 09:22

But, if this student is at school the rest of the time in Year 11, it is a very anti-homosexual culture amongst teenage boys. Can be very threatening and intimidating.

So I would imagine he is OTT when out of school, if he is having to repress it at school

fizzbuzz · 07/12/2007 09:34

Also, he is 15, and a boy, not a man, and as yet probably hasn't learnt how to behave in suitable manner. Plenty of 15 year old boys behave in a much worse and much more unpleasant manner than this IME

MaeBee · 07/12/2007 09:35

give the boy a break! he's just a kid! jesus, i did a lot more inappropriate things than that when i was that age. come to think of it, ive been caught giggling at innuendos in toddler groups and im 33.
well done for being a supportive but not over the top parent by the way. i came out as bi to my parents when i was 15 and they were pretty cool about it too.

Well said Maebee,

I think he sounds very mature about his sexuality tbh. I teach in a good school, but know not one 15 year old who is brave enough to be like this, and I don't blame them, it is a pretty nasty atmosphere at secondary school for a gay pupil.

Fww, I would really quite like to teach this kid. At least he's got some spirit and life, and doesn't sit slumped and sneering at his desk like a lot of boys his age

I LOVE individuality in kids, gives me faith that we are not sinking into a bland xfactor world!

fizz thank you for that, thats a lovely thing to say.
just have to add that ds has only been met with very positive attitude towards his coming out both at school and out of school.

i didn't say you were a homophobe, i said your comments were the only homophobic thing i have seen on this thread. having a gay son makes no difference to the fact that you are quite happy to stereotype all gay men as camp screaming drama queens. much in the same way that i find black rap artists or comedians using the word nigger but villifying any other race who choose to use the word hypocritical, i find it odd that you start a thread about someone possibly being homophobic towards your son and in your first post you decide to make a sweeping about all gay men.that was my only point.
