Van idling for over 15 minutes now

Sat outside my window, idling for ages.

Noise is annoying, waste of fuel, and bad for the environment. How hard is it to turn the engine off?

Aibu to be annoyed .

YANBU especially during this current fuel situation as well.

arield · 28/09/2021 10:47

He's still there. Looks like he's having lunch, which is fine.. but switch off!

Oh this fucks me off. Go outside and tell him it's triggering your asthma. We get this a lot and I can't get my head around it - why just burn fuel and pollute for absolutely NO reason?

itsraininghere · 28/09/2021 10:50

I'd knock on his window and tell him he's disturbing you. Have done that before when taxis idle outside our house. Usually they drive off , so I'm happy.

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 28/09/2021 10:51

The only excuse I could imagine is if he’s running a refrigerated unit, but that is likely to apply to only a small proportion of vans.

NightVinca · 28/09/2021 10:51

Yanbu.

rwalker · 28/09/2021 10:52

I work for one of the utilies we have equipment (testers laptops and phones) we need to charge at dinner the only way you can do this is with engine running.

Also it's pissing it down here if there working outside might have heater on to get warm and dry .

BetterCare · 28/09/2021 10:54

This is one of my absolute hates and for some reason, I live on a road where people do this a lot.

I do say something for no other reason than the noise just drives me insane and once I have locked onto I can't ignore it. It is so inconsiderate and actually against the law.

loveinthe90s · 28/09/2021 10:54

It does sound annoying.
Am assuming you mean brunch or lunch though. Or maybe you're not in the UKConfused

loveinthe90s · 28/09/2021 10:54

Sorry brunch NOT lunch. It's not even 11am!

MacMahon · 28/09/2021 11:15

YANBU delivery drivers do this on our street and it can be felt all through our old houses.

And then they feel the need to shout over the noise of their engine.

ofwarren · 28/09/2021 11:28

Engine noise is one of my triggers. I can't bear listening to a vehicle idling outside. YANBU.

Antinerak · 28/09/2021 11:29

Go out and tell him you're in a meeting, can he turn his engine off. He's likely sat there waiting for a job and doesn't realise how long he's been there.

Stellaris22 · 28/09/2021 11:34

YANBU, I hate it and it happens on our street a lot. Happens outside our school as well, parents sat in their car with engines running, no consideration for the fumes. I hate it and wish people would be fined for the pollution (logistically impossible I know).

Neron · 28/09/2021 11:41

YANBU
Someone pulled up in front of my house at 4.45am Sunday morning and left the engine running, plus music, whilst they had a chat. Went out in my dressing gown after 10 mins (am a bungalow, bedroom at the front).

yossell · 28/09/2021 11:44

Idling is a traffic violation isn't it. So I think you're within your rights to instruct him to stop.

xILikeJamx · 28/09/2021 11:50

Idling is only illegal if it's unnecessary. Maybe it's necessary for whatever they've got / are doing in the van. Also sitting with the electrics on and engine off is risking a flat battery

WildRosie · 28/09/2021 11:53

Most inconsiderate. I used to get this with the same rattly diesel van every morning from 5 o'clock. Eventually I complained to the company that owned it and the problem stopped immediately and permanently.

1990s · 28/09/2021 11:59

This is actually illegal.

Under the Road Vehicle Regulations (1986) it's an offence to leave vehicle engines running unnecessarily when they are stationary

idontlikealdi · 28/09/2021 11:59

The police do this outside the local coffee shop here, I assume to keep systems running, but have never for my head around how they lock the cars.

The key being "unnecessarily" - if he's charging equipment he could argue it was necessary.
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 28/09/2021 12:22

YANBU at all, this is a massive pet hate of mine. Pretty much the only good thing to come out of the fuel crisis is that virtually everyone who had a very Special and Important reason for sitting there guffing out fumes suddenly realised that, actually, they didn't.

EvilPea · 28/09/2021 12:25

School run does my head in for that. 30 minutes of diesel fumes fogging up the air.

AuraofDora · 28/09/2021 14:45

YANBU & wtaf I hate this filthy wasteful and aggressive shit idle engine behaviour

They’re probably like our trucks you press a button that keeps the engine running but you can take the keys out and lock it
