To wonder why my sexuality is important for a sports club?

I'm about to join a sports club, to register with the governing body I have to answer some questions,
Do you have a disability
Ethnicity and
'which of the following best describes yourself '

Asexual
Bisexual
Gay or lesbian woman
Gay man
Heterosexual
Other
Prefer not to say
Unsure

Why does this matter, they don't ask my religion or my favourite drink, why is this question needed?

The barriers to accessing sport if can be linked with additional needs, but people with additional needs often, quite rightly, do not consider themselves to be disabled.

How can who they find attractive be a relevant question?

@GladAllOver

Ask them for the GDPR compliant reason they are collecting that specific data. They could say they need it to provide adequate changing room facilities.
Really? Separate provisions by sexualities?
0blio · 28/09/2021 13:01

It is absolutely irrelevant. But we're in the era of being expected to share all our confidential personal information, nothing can just be kept private any more.
Of course we need diversity and inclusion but someone's sexual preferences do not need to be shared with all and sundry.

@Whydoyouneedtoknow

Red you are right, in fact religion may be more important, maybe I would not be available for matches on the Sabbath, or may need an area to pray.
No, you would only get those answers by asking people what days they are available and whether they would like a prayer room.

I'd just click "prefer not to say" and get on with my day. No one really cares if you answer it or not.

Many sports clubs are affiliated to governing bodies which will, rightly, be working to improve accessibility and inclusion in all their member clubs, so this may be a 'higher level' policy.

Then when OP enquires that is what they will tell her, hopefully with a link to the NGBs site and the programme concerned.

Just tick other and state that you're only attracted to asexual tree frogs.

Neonplant · 28/09/2021 13:41

@araiwa

This has been going on for decades in various ways.

You really don't know? I find that difficult to believe Confused

Yep this. I honestly don't buy that you don't understand why diversity is monitored.
CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/09/2021 13:42

And I don't honestly know why you don't understand the legalities around collecting such data.

EdgeOfTheSky · 28/09/2021 14:31

If the club is council or charity supported they will be required to provide Equal Opps monitoring to demonstrate that subsidy is being enjoyed by all sections of society, especially those with Protected Characteristics.

CecilyP · 28/09/2021 15:02

But how can they deny equal opportunities to people based on their sexuality unless they know what your sexuality is? With few exceptions, and that is only guesswork, they won’t know what your sexuality is unless you tell them.

Whydoyouneedtoknow · 28/09/2021 15:45

Yep this. I honestly don't buy that you don't understand why diversity is monitored

And I don't understand why they need to know my, personal sexuality as a piece of data attached to my registration, rather than anonymous diversity data.

There is a difference between my application saying Whydoyou is a Lesbian/gay/Heterosexual
and knowing that a percentage of people in the sports team are

These questions are optional. Don't answer if you don't want.

Whydoyouneedtoknow · 28/09/2021 15:49

@MajorCarolDanvers

These questions are optional. Don't answer if you don't want.
But they are not. I have to answer something to register, and by refusing to say you are still answering. If it was an anonymous monitoring question I would answer happily.
